Characterization of Escherichia coli isolated from urinary tract infection and association between virulence expression and antimicrobial susceptibility

Safoura Derakhshan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of antibiotics on the virulence of Escherichia coli in urinary tract infections. The results showed that sub-inhibitory concentrations of ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone can reduce the expression levels of virulence factors and hemolysis.

Efficacy of Fosfomycin against Planktonic and Biofilm-Associated MDR Uropathogenic Escherichia coli Clinical Isolates

Haziel Eleazar Dzib-Baak et al.

Summary: Urinary tract infections caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli are a severe public health problem. Fosfomycin has shown efficacy against multidrug-resistant strains and degradative activity on biofilm producers. This study evaluated the in vitro efficacy of fosfomycin on a collection of multidrug-resistant UPEC and its degradative activity on biofilm producers.

Summary: This study found that ESBL-positive isolates of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli strains are more resistant to some first-line antibiotics, highlighting the need to control and monitor the prescription of antibiotics used for empirical treatment of UTI patients.
