High-density DArTSeq SNP markers revealed wide genetic diversity and structured population in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) germplasm in Ethiopia

Yonas Moges Gelaw et al.

Summary: This study assessed the genetic diversity and population structure of 289 common bean cultivars collected from different regions in Ethiopia using 11,480 DArTSeq SNP markers. The results revealed that although there were differences among regions, geographical distance was not the main driver of differentiation. Therefore, the selection of parental lines should be based on systematic assessment of diversity. This article provides new insights into the genetic diversity and population structure of common bean for association studies, and offers information for the collection and conservation of the crop.

Genome-wide association analysis of bean fly resistance and agro-morphological traits in common bean

Wilson Nkhata et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the population structure of a diverse panel of common bean genotypes and deduce associations between bean fly resistance and agronomic traits based on single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. Through phenotyping and genotyping, significant variations were found in disease severity, mortality rate, pupa count, and other agronomic traits among the genotypes. The genotypes were categorized into Andean and Mesoamerican gene pools, and 83 significant markers were identified for marker-assisted selection in breeding programs.
