PS9, Derived from an Aquatic Fungus Virulent Protein, Glycosyl Hydrolase, Arrests MCF-7 Proliferation by Regulating Intracellular Reactive Oxygen Species and Apoptotic Pathways

Manikandan Velayutham et al.

Summary: Breast cancer is a common and deadly disease in women. Current treatment options such as surgery, chemotherapy, hormone treatments, and radiation have adverse side effects. Peptide-based drugs, derived from biological toxins, have shown potential therapeutic effects against various diseases including cancer. This study reports on the invitro anticancer effect of a short peptide, PS9, derived from an aquatic fungus. PS9 inhibited the proliferation of MCF-7 cells by regulating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptotic pathways. It showed dose-dependent activity and is non-toxic in vitro and in vivo zebrafish larvae. PS9 has the potential to be an effective anticancer drug.

Anti-Cancer and Anti-Inflammatory Activities of a Short Molecule, PS14 Derived from the Virulent Cellulose Binding Domain of Aphanomyces invadans, on Human Laryngeal Epithelial Cells and an In Vivo Zebrafish Embryo Model

Manikandan Velayutham et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory activities of PS14, a short peptide derived from a pathogenic fungus. It was found that PS14 is non-toxic and exhibits potential anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that PS14 was effective in inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis in cancer cells and zebrafish embryos. Furthermore, PS14 demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity in various cell-free assays. Overall, this study identified the anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties of PS14, highlighting its potential therapeutic applications.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the RF13 peptide derived from VSP26B has potential anticancer properties. It inhibits the proliferation of HEp-2 cells and induces apoptosis, possibly through the arrest of cell cycle and upregulation of apoptotic gene expression. Further research is needed to understand the specific target mechanism and develop therapeutic approaches for this potential anticancer agent.
