Genomic basis of Y-linked dwarfism in cichlids pursuing alternative reproductive tactics

Pooja Singh et al.

Summary: Sexually antagonistic selection has a significant role in the evolution of sex chromosomes. In the shell-brooding cichlid fish, a sexually antagonistic trait, body size, is linked to a 2.4-Mb sex-linked region with candidate genes for body size and sex determination. This study provides evidence supporting the hypothesis that sexually antagonistic traits are linked to young sex chromosomes.

Gene-poor Y-chromosomes substantially impact male trait heritabilities and may help shape sexually dimorphic evolution

Tobias Mogelvang Nielsen et al.

Summary: It is unclear how natural selection promotes sexually dimorphic evolution despite shared genomic information. Y-chromosomes, with their patrilineal inheritance, have been dismissed as a solution due to their gene-poor, heterochromatic nature. However, this study found that Y-chromosomes play an important role in male trait evolution, with Y-linked additivity influencing several traits shared by both sexes.

Joint identification of sex and sex-linked scaffolds in non-model organisms using low depth sequencing data

Casia Nursyifa et al.

Summary: The SATC method is proposed to assign sex to samples and identify sex-linked scaffolds from NGS data, working for species with a homogametic/heterogametic sex determination system. It uses scaffold depth distribution and PCA to achieve sex assignment and sex-linked scaffold identification, without prior knowledge of sample sex, using WGS data.

A large and diverse autosomal haplotype is associated with sex-linked colour polymorphism in the guppy

Josephine R. Paris et al.

Summary: Extreme colour pattern variation in male Trinidadian guppies is influenced by both natural selection and sexual selection. This study found that colour pattern is associated with genetic diversity on an autosome, rather than a 'supergene' on the sex chromosome.

Benjamin A. Sandkam et al.

Summary: Males of the freshwater fish Poecilia parae occur as one of five morphs with different reproductive strategies that are controlled by five Y haplotypes. Analysis of Y chromosomes of the five morphs shows extreme diversity in the three major morphs despite constraints imposed by lack of recombination of sex chromosomes.

Sexual conflict drives micro- and macroevolution of sexual dimorphism in immunity

Basabi Bagchi et al.

Summary: Our study reveals that female seed beetles have higher phenoloxidase (PO) activity compared to males, and there are sex differences in the expression of genes in the prophenoloxidase activating cascade. Experimental evolution under enforced monogamy led to a decrease in female PO activity and an increase in tolerance to bacterial infection unrelated to mating. Additionally, female PO activity is correlated with male genitalia harmfulness across 12 species of seed beetles, suggesting that sexual conflict influences sexual dimorphisms in immunity in this group of insects.

Rapid evolution of sexual size dimorphism facilitated by Y-linked genetic variance

Philipp Kaufmann et al.

Summary: The evolution of sexual body size dimorphism in seed beetles primarily depends on female additive genetic variance linked to autosomes, with a strong intersexual genetic correlation with males. Sexual dimorphism evolved in response to male-limited and sexually antagonistic selection, but not under female-limited selection. Y-linked genes alone could change dimorphism significantly, despite the small size and heterochromatin nature of the Y chromosome in C. maculatus.
