A few-layer covalent network of fullerenes

Elena Meirzadeh et al.

Summary: This study introduces a two-dimensional crystalline polymer called graphullerene, which bridges the gap between molecular and extended carbon materials. It consists of hexagonally arranged C60 fullerene subunits that are covalently interconnected. The researchers have successfully synthesized large, charge-neutral, purely carbon-based crystals that can be mechanically exfoliated to produce molecularly thin flakes with clean interfaces. The thermal conductivity of graphullerene is found to be higher than that of molecular C60, thanks to its in-plane covalent bonding. Furthermore, the presence of moire-like superlattices is observed using transmission electron microscopy and near field nano-photoluminescence spectroscopy.

Performance improvement of air liquefaction processes for liquid air energy storage (LAES) using magnetic refrigeration system

Hojat Ansarinasab et al.

Summary: Shifting towards renewable energy is important for the environment, and liquid air energy storage (LAES) is a promising option for energy storage. This study proposes novel configurations incorporating magnetic refrigeration pre-cooling for air liquefaction cycles in LAES. The proposed schemes significantly reduce specific energy consumption and increase exergy efficiency compared to conventional cycles without precooling.

Thermodynamic and magnetocaloric properties of an AnB60-n fullerene-like structure under the applied magnetic field

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: The thermodynamic and magnetocaloric properties of an AnB60-n Ising fullerene-like structure were studied using the Monte Carlo method. The importance of exchange coupling, applied magnetic field, and atom concentration in controlling various thermodynamic quantities was emphasized. The temperature dependence of entropy change and adiabatic temperature change were further discussed under different parameters. The refrigeration cooling power (RCP) can be improved by decreasing exchange coupling and increasing external magnetic field and atom concentration with greater spin values.

Magnetocaloric effect in MnCoGe alloys studied by first-principles calculations and Monte-Carlo simulation

Hung Ba Tran et al.

Summary: By combining density functional theory (DFT) and Monte-Carlo simulation, the magnetocaloric effect in orthorhombic MnCoGe1-xCux alloys was investigated. The increase in Cu concentration led to a significant decrease in the magnetic exchange coupling constants and a rapid decrease in the Curie temperature of the alloy. This shows that the magnetocaloric properties of the MnCoGe alloy can be controlled by changing the concentration of Cu.

Magnetocaloric effect, electronic and magnetic properties of Ba1-xSrxFeO3 barium-strontium ferrites: Monte Carlo simulations and comparative study between TB-mBJ and GGA+U

G. Kadim et al.

Summary: The magnetocaloric effect, electronic and magnetic properties of cubic perovskite oxide Ba1-xSrxFeO3 were studied, showing that Sr substitution leads to a decrease in total magnetic moment, Curie temperature, and exchange integrals, in agreement with experimental results. Ba0.8Sr0.2FeO3 exhibits a half-metallic ground state with ferromagnetic coupling of Fe spin. Ab initio calculations and Monte Carlo simulations showed quantitative agreement with experimental transition temperatures. The magnetic entropy change decreased with Sr substitution, reaching the experimental value.
