A modular spectral solver for crystal plasticity

Ritesh Dadhich et al.

Summary: A FFT-based modular solver for crystal plasticity is proposed in this paper. It solves the balance of momentum in a global iterative loop and single crystal plasticity in an inner loop using an implicit time integration scheme. The response of single crystals is modeled by coupling slip system based constitutive equations to crystal kinematics. The solver is validated against experimental data and shows excellent agreement. The FFT solver is also used to analyze the deformation behavior of a dual phase polycrystal and exhibits good accuracy compared to an open-source finite element crystal plasticity solver.

An alternative formulation of two-grain cluster model for homogenization of elastoviscoplastic behavior of polycrystal

Kengo Yoshida

Summary: Crystal plasticity models are widely used in the field of sheet metal forming, but a homogenization approach is needed for properly simulating the forming process due to the small size of the grains. In this study, a two-grain cluster (TGC) homogenization approach was proposed and compared with other methods. The results showed that the TGC model outperformed other models in predicting flow stress, R-value, and texture evolution. An advantage of the TGC model is that the homogenized constitutive equation can be analytically derived and easily implemented into the finite element method, enabling two-scale simulation.

Crystal plasticity-based homogenized models of transformed β colonies in titanium alloys

S. Mustafa Kazim et al.

Summary: The microstructure of near alpha and alpha + beta Ti alloys has a significant impact on mechanical properties, and is widely studied using crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) analysis of polycrystalline representative volume elements (RVEs). Homogenized models may lead to inaccurate estimates of deformation behavior, and asymptotic expansion-based homogenization can be used to evaluate this inaccuracy.

Crystal plasticity modeling of a titanium alloy under thermo-mechanical fatigue

Rishu Gupta et al.

Summary: A crystal plasticity model was developed to study the fatigue behavior of Ti-6Al-4V under different thermo-mechanical loading conditions, and was calibrated and validated using experimental data. The simulations under in-phase and out-of-phase thermo-mechanical fatigue loads successfully captured the differences in stress range and hysteresis between the two cases, with the stress distribution in the microstructure explaining the observed longer life under in-phase loading compared to out-of-phase loading.
