Sustainable processing of gold cyanide tailings: Reduction roasting, mechanical activation, non-cyanide leaching, and magnetic separation

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an eco-friendly and efficient method to recover gold, iron, and silicon from cyanide tailings (CTs). By controlling the reduction atmosphere and temperature, >99% of cyanide can be selectively removed, along with 65.3% of encapsulated gold in iron oxide and sulfide. Mechanical activation reduces particle size and liberates 92.3% of gold encapsulated in silicate and iron oxide minerals, increasing the extraction efficiency of gold to 94.5% in a non-cyanide leaching process. Magnetic separation results in 60.9% grade and 74.6% recovery of iron concentrate, while the tailings with 28.4% Si grade can be used in building materials. This technology enables the harmless utilization of hazardous CTs and shows potential for industrial applications.

Electronic simulations of alanine and water coadsorption over Defect-free and Sulfur-depleted sphalerite surfaces

Abolfazl Alizadeh Sahraei et al.

Summary: This study used DFT to simulate interactions between solvated alanine and ZnS surfaces, finding that solvated alanine prefers to bind with neighboring water molecules on defect-free ZnS surfaces, while forming stable monodentate bonds with Zn atoms around vacancy sites on sulfur-depleted ZnS surfaces. The density of sulfur vacancies on the ZnS surface was identified as a key factor in controlling the interactions between solvated alanine and ZnS.

Unveiling the role of Ca ion in the sulfidation of smithsonite: A density functional theory study

Yuanjia Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, density functional theory calculations were used to investigate the inhibition effect and mechanism of calcium ion on the sulfidation of smithsonite. The results showed that the reactivity of the smithsonite surface was significantly decreased after the adsorption of calcium ion, and the adsorption energies of HS on the smithsonite surface in the presence of calcium ion were much higher than those in the absence of calcium ion. The analysis of bond population, electron density, and partial density of states revealed that the calcium-sulfur bonds formed after calcium ion adsorption were weaker and less stable compared to the zinc-sulfur bonds formed before calcium ion adsorption. Moreover, the hydration shell on the smithsonite surface became more resistant to penetration by HS after calcium ion adsorption. These factors jointly contributed to the inhibition effect of calcium ion on the adsorption of HS on the smithsonite surface. This study provides important insights into the negative impact of calcium ion on the sulfidation of smithsonite.

Summary: In this study, phytic acid (PA) was applied as a depressant for the flotation separation of smithsonite from calcite. The selective depressing effect of PA was well investigated, and it was found that the different active sites on the minerals' surfaces played a key role in the selective adsorption of PA. This research provides theoretical and practical reference for the clean flotation of smithsonite.

Study on the enhancement mechanism of Pb ion on smithsonite sulfidation with coordination chemistry and first-principles calculations

Yuanjia Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, coordination chemistry analysis and first-principles calculations were used to investigate the enhancement mechanism of Pb ion on smithsonite sulfidation. The results showed that the reactivity of the Pb ion modified smithsonite surface increased due to the strong interaction between Pb ion and HS, and the stronger bonding of Pb-S compared to Zn-S. Additionally, HS was found to be more likely to break through the hydrated layer on Pb ion modified smithsonite surface. These findings shed new light on the enhancement mechanism of Pb ion on smithsonite sulfidation.

DFT insights into the sulfidation mechanism of Fe-impurity smithsonite

Yuanjia Luo et al.

Summary: The presence of Fe impurities significantly altered the structure and electronic properties of smithsonite surfaces, affecting the sulfidation-flotation process. The adsorption energy of HS on Fe-bearing smithsonite surfaces was lower than on perfect surfaces, and the presence of S-OH in the sulfidation product decreased the hydrophobicity of the sulfidation film, which was not conducive to sulfidation-flotation.
