Effects of temperature, CO content, and reduction time on the selective reduction of a limonitic laterite ore

Ningjie Sun et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of temperature, CO content, and reduction time on the selective reduction of limonitic laterite ore and found that selective reduction can be achieved by controlling reduction temperature and gas composition. The results suggest that CO content over 20% volume promoted Fe formation from laterite ore but hardly enhanced Ni and Co formation, and the difference in equilibrium CO partial pressures for the formation of Fe, Ni, Co accounts for selective reduction. Under optimal conditions, the degrees of metallisation of iron, nickel, and cobalt reduction were 17.5%, 87.3%, and 91.5%, respectively.

Evolution of ferronickel particles during the reduction of low-grade saprolitic laterite nickel ore by coal in the temperature range of 900-1250°C with the addition of CaO-CaF2-H3BO3

Zulfiadi Zulhan et al.

Summary: The method of producing ferronickel at low temperature by Nippon Yakin Kogyo, Japan since the 1950s uses limestone as an additive to lower slag melting point. Experiments showed that the addition of CaO, CaF2, and H3BO3 additives can significantly increase the size of ferronickel particles below 1250 degrees Celsius, with the largest particle size achieved by the addition of all three additives.
