Carboniferous-Permian volcanic evolution in the mid-European Variscides: U-Pb LA-ICP-MS zircon ages, geochemical and petrographical constraints from the NW Saxonian Volcanic Basin (Germany)

Frank Loecse et al.

Summary: U-Pb isotope ages were obtained using LA-ICP-MS for magmatic zircon grains in various volcanic rocks of the NW Saxonian Volcanic Basin. The ages ranged from late Pennsylvanian to early Cisuralian (301-299 Ma). The radiometric age of the supereruption in the Rochlitz Volcanic System is consistent with biostratigraphic evidence for the first time. Geochemical data for different volcanic rocks are reported, providing a modified understanding of the Kohren, Rochlitz, and Oschatz formations, as well as insights into the volcano-tectonic processes of the NW Saxonian Volcanic Basin.

Breakup with benefits - hydrothermal mineral systems related to the disintegration of a supercontinent

Mathias Burisch et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the available geochronological data for hydrothermal mineral systems in Europe and North Africa, revealing a spatial and temporal relationship between these systems and the tectonic evolution of the Tethys-Atlantic-Caribbean rift system. Based on this evaluation, a continental-scale model is proposed for the genesis of Mesozoic hydrothermal ore deposits associated with the breakup of the supercontinent Pangea.

Timing of magmatic-hydrothermal activity in the Variscan Orogenic Belt: LA-ICP-MS U-Pb geochronology of skarn-related garnet from the Schwarzenberg District, Erzgebirge

Nils Reinhardt et al.

Summary: In this study, in situ U-Pb laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) ages of andradite-grossular garnet from four magmatic-hydrothermal polymetallic skarn prospects in the Schwarzenberg District, Erzgebirge (Germany) were presented. The obtained garnet ages defined three distinct episodes of Variscan skarn formation, occurring throughout different stages of the Variscan orogenic cycle over a time range of at least 40 Ma. This observation is consistent with the available geochronological data related to similar magmatic-hydrothermal ore deposits in the Variscan Orogenic Belt.

Formation of tin ore deposits: A reassessment

Bernd Lehmann

Summary: The majority of historically mined tin comes from a few tin ore provinces within larger granite belts, with primary tin ore deposits related to late granite phases. Alluvial placer deposits are usually the starting point for tin mining, and tin distribution is influenced by oxidation state and mineralogical differences. Tin characterizes the inner high-temperature part of larger zoned magmatic-hydrothermal systems, with specific chemical signatures in different parts of the system.

Timing of native metal-arsenide (Ag-Bi-Co-Ni-As±U) veins in continental rift zones - In situ U-Pb geochronology of carbonates from the Erzgebirge/Krusne Hory province

Marie Guilcher et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the formation of hydrothermal native metal-arsenide veins in Central Europe occurred approximately between 230 and 86 million years ago. The genesis of native metal-arsenide mineralization is related to continental rifting associated with the opening of the Atlantic and Alpine Tethys Oceans.

The Niederschlag fluorite-(barite) deposit, Erzgebirge/Germany-a fluid inclusion and trace element study

Sebastian Haschke et al.

Summary: The Niederschlag fluorite-barite vein deposit in the Western Erzgebirge, Germany, has been actively mined since 2013. The study identified two different stages of fluorite mineralization with distinct characteristics. The fluid inclusions and REY systematics of the two stages of fluorite show significant differences in their properties and compositions.

Mineralogy and fluid characteristics of the Waschleithe Zn skarn-a distal part of the Schwarzenberg mineral system, Erzgebirge, Germany

Nils Reinhardt et al.

Summary: The Waschleithe skarn in the Erzgebirge district of Germany is a Zn-dominant skarn with minerals like hedenbergite, garnet, and magnetite, formed during both prograde and retrograde stages. Mineral temperatures and pressures suggest a depth of formation around 3 km, with the Eibenstock granite identified as the likely fluid source.

Spatial and Temporal Evolution of the Freiberg Epithermal Ag-Pb-Zn District, Germany

Laura J. Swinkels et al.

Summary: The Freiberg district in Europe hosts one of the largest series of epithermal polymetallic vein deposits, allowing for the study of these systems through systematic collection of historical samples. Detailed investigations revealed six distinctive mineral associations within the veins. The architecture of the district is related to the evolution of magmatic-hydrothermal fluid systems, with constraints indicating vein formation between 200 and 1,800 meters below the paleowater table.

Li-Co-Ni-Mn-(REE) veins of the Western Erzgebirge, Germany-a potential source of battery raw materials

Mathias Burisch et al.

Summary: The Eichigt prospect in the Western Erzgebirge metallogenetic province is associated with unique polymetallic oxyhydroxide mineralization, predominantly hosted by lithiophorite, containing high concentrations of lithium, cobalt, and nickel along with significant amounts of copper and light rare earth elements. The age of the mineralization coincides with tectonic activity related to the Cenozoic Eger Graben rifting, suggesting a low-temperature hydrothermal overprint on pre-existing base metal sulfide-quartz mineralization as the most likely origin. However, tectonically enhanced deep-reaching fracture-controlled supergene weathering cannot be entirely ruled out.
