A systematic review of EPDS cultural suitability with Indigenous mothers: a global perspective

Ai Wen Chan et al.

Summary: The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is widely used as the gold standard for perinatal depression and anxiety screening, but this study highlights concerns about its cultural suitability for use with Indigenous women. The quality of evidence supporting cultural validation in Indigenous groups was not strong, emphasizing the need for more targeted research in this area. Recommendations were made for the adoption of Indigenous-specific methodologies to improve the trustworthiness, cultural safety, and effectiveness of research in this field.
