A review on atom probe and correlative microscopy studies of corrosion in nickel-based superalloys

C. Rodenkirchen et al.

Summary: This article discusses the challenges faced in developing new Ni-based superalloys for the hottest sections of turbine engines and the use of atom probe tomography and correlative microscopy to characterize these complex alloys. The article introduces the strengthening phases Y and Y ', reviews the precipitation of topologically close-packed phases and their detrimental effects on superalloy properties, and explains mechanisms of environmental degradation. It also explores recent research on a new phenomenon of hot corrosion at low temperatures, and reviews the effects of individual alloying elements on superalloy properties, with a focus on Mo and W. The use of atom probe in correlation with advanced microscopy techniques to study oxidation and corrosion of Ni-based superalloys is also presented.

Comparing Xe+pFIB and Ga+FIB for TEM sample preparation of Al alloys: Minimising FIB-induced artefacts

Xiangli Zhong et al.

Summary: The dual beam Xe+ plasma focused ion beam (Xe(+)pFIB) instrument has shown potential benefits over conventional Ga+FIB for site-specific TEM sample preparation. The study demonstrates that Xe(+)pFIB milling produces improved STEM/TEM samples compared to Ga+ milling, making it the preferred specimen preparation route. Strategies for minimizing FIB-induced artefacts are also proposed.

High-resolution terahertz-driven atom probe tomography

Angela Vella et al.

Summary: The strong electromagnetic field at the atomic scale is crucial for future investigations and manipulations of ionization dynamics and excitation in solids. By coupling picosecond duration terahertz pulses to metallic nanostructures, extremely localized and intense electric fields can be generated. In this study, control over field ion emission from metallic nanotips is demonstrated using single-cycle terahertz pulses, showing ultrafast evaporation of surface atoms as ions induced by the terahertz near field on the subpicosecond time scale.

Comparative Apex Electrostatics of Atom Probe Tomography Specimens

Qihua Zhang et al.

Summary: The article introduces a simulation tool that self-consistently solves the nonlinear electrostatic Poisson equation and provides a detailed picture of the electrostatic environment of APT specimen tips. It compares the cases of metal, semiconductor, and dielectric tips. The study finds that the K-factor approximation accurately predicts the electrostatic properties of metal and semiconductor tips, but performs poorly for dielectric tips.

Xenon plasma focussed ion beam preparation of an Al-6XXX alloy sample for atom probe tomography including analysis of an α-Al(Fe,Mn) Si dispersoid

J. R. Famelton et al.

Summary: The use of a Xe plasma Focussed Ion Beam instrument in preparing in-situ specimens for Atom Probe Tomography is found to show no significant differences in the nature and distribution of precipitates and solute clusters compared to standard electropolishing methods. Site-specific specimen preparation also enables the observation of segregation in both the phase boundary and shell of the dispersoid in an alpha-Al(Fe,Mn)Si dispersoid.

A review of defect engineering, ion implantation, and nanofabrication using the helium ion microscope

Frances I. Allen

Summary: The helium ion microscope has become a multifaceted instrument used not only for imaging but also for defect engineering, ion implantation, and nanofabrication tasks. Operating the ion source with neon has further extended the technology's range of applications. This paper reviews materials modification research enabled by the helium ion microscope since its commercialization in 2007, covering studies from beam-sample effects to prototyping new devices with features below 10 nm.
