Size control and electronic manipulation of Ru catalyst over B, N co-doped carbon network for high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction

Shuai Xu et al.

Summary: Exploring highly efficient Pt-free catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for hydrogen (H-2) production. In this study, a novel HER electrocatalyst with abundant ultra-small (2-3 nm) Ru confined by a B, N co-doped polar carbon surface (Ru/(B-N)-PC) was developed. The Ru/(B-N)-PC catalyst exhibited superior performance with a low overpotential, low Tafel slope and excellent durability, outperforming the benchmark Pt/C catalyst. The electron communication between the B, N co-doped carbon surface and ultra-small Ru nanoparticles contributed to the electronic modification of Ru and enhanced the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Loose spherical FeOOH/MnO nanoarrays from a simple in situ hydrothermal method for enhanced oxygen evolution electrocatalysis

Dexing Meng et al.

Summary: The loose spherical MnFe bimetal oxide nanoarrays based on nickel foam were successfully synthesized by a simple in situ hydrothermal method. The loose nanoarrays facilitate water adsorption and exposure of active sites, enabling the catalyst to exhibit excellent electrocatalytic OER activity. The low crystal-linity characteristic of the material is favorable for lattice distortion shrinkage, and the formation of Fe/Mn-O sites can accelerate the charge transfer rate, thereby accelerating the OER process. Meanwhile, the strong interaction of electrons between the hetero-structure can adjust the binding energy intensity and enhance the density of states near the Fermi level, improving the electrocatalytic performance.
