3D printed electrodes design and voltammetric response

William B. Veloso et al.

Summary: The limitations in the voltammetric response of 3D printed electrodes are studied using numerical simulations and new electrode designs. Severe diffusion limitations are found in a commonly used 3D printed electrode and electrochemical cell design, hindering the investigation of electron transfer kinetics. A new non-recessed electrode design is used to study the voltammetric response without mass transport limitations, revealing that the response is limited by contact resistance. By considering contact resistance and finite electron transfer kinetics, the peak potentials and currents of voltammograms recorded with 3D printed electrodes can be predicted before printing, allowing for optimized electrode designs in the virtual space.

3D electrochemical device obtained by additive manufacturing for sequential determination of paraquat and carbendazim in food samples

Luiz Ricardo Guterres Silva et al.

Summary: This study proposes a ready-to-use electrochemical sensor made with 3D printing technology for detecting paraquat and carbendazim in crops, which are highly harmful to human health. The lab-made and easily obtainable sensor with graphite on a polylactic acid matrix showed excellent performance in analyzing paraquat and carbendazim in honey, milk, juice, and water samples. The sequential analysis of these two compounds in a mixture was suggested, achieving optimal individual analysis. The detection limits for paraquat and carbendazim were 0.01 and 0.03 μmol/L, respectively, and recovery tests demonstrated the method's suitability, with a range of 94.5 to 113.7%, as well as the suitability of 3D printing for environmental and food sample analysis.

Additive manufactured microfluidic device for electrochemical detection of carbendazim in honey samples

Luiz R. G. Silva et al.

Summary: The use of pesticides is important for protecting crops, but they can be harmful to the environment and humans. Therefore, developing analytical devices for monitoring pesticides in food sources is crucial. This study utilized a paper-based microfluidic device with additive manufactured platform and electrochemical sensors for the sustainable detection of carbendazim in honey samples. The microfluidic system showed satisfactory results, with a linear range of 0.5-40.0 μmol L-1 and a LOD of 0.09 μmol L-1. The recovery test in honey samples yielded values between 92.4% and 108.8%. These findings demonstrate the potential of the proposed microfluidic device in detecting carbendazim in real samples, using sustainable and renewable materials.
