How environmentally friendly is the analytical process? A paradigm overview of ten greenness assessment metric approaches for analytical methods

Mohamed S. Imam et al.

Summary: Green chemistry principles have been integrated into various branches of chemistry, including analytical chemistry, due to the growing concern for the environment. Analytical procedures have the potential to cause environmental damage and pose risks to operators. Therefore, it is important to consider the consequences and implications of researchers' and users' activities in analytical techniques. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the history of Green Analytical Chemistry (GAC) and the existing greenness assessment metric tools. It also explores the relevance of these tools in different analytical approaches and examines their strengths and weaknesses.

A new green approach for the reduction of consumed solvents and simultaneous quality control analysis of several pharmaceuticals using a fast and economic RP-HPLC method; a case study for a mixture of piracetam, ketoprofen and omeprazole drugs

Mohamed A. Abdelgawad et al.

Summary: One of the main aims of green analytical chemistry is to reduce solvents and chemicals consumed. Recycling the mobile phase in chromatographic techniques provides an efficient way to achieve this. This study introduces a novel and green RP-HPLC method that can separate and quantify multiple pharmaceutical dosage forms produced by the same manufacturer. The method significantly reduces solvent consumption, time, and cost during pharmaceutical analysis.

Life cycle analysis and sustainability comparison of reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography and carbon dioxide-containing chromatography of small molecule pharmaceuticals

Brian N. Fitch et al.

Summary: This work highlights the importance of considering both solvent usage and instrumental energy consumption in determining the greenness of chromatographic separations. It compares the greenness of supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) and reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) using life cycle analysis and the analytical method greenness score. The study shows that SFC separations can be less environmentally friendly than RP-HPLC separations at low flow rates, but the overall greenness of SFC can be improved by adjusting chromatographic conditions. The use of electrical energy sources in instruments can also reduce the impact of energy consumption.
