Heavy metals exposure, carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic human health risks assessment of groundwater around mines in Joghatai, Iran

Mahmoud Shams et al.

Summary: Contamination of surface and groundwater resources with heavy metals due to mining activities poses a major health risk to local residents worldwide. This research in Sabzevar, Iran, measured the concentrations of As, Cd, and Cr in water samples from rural areas near mines and assessed potential health risks. The concentrations of As and Cr in drinking water exceeded WHO guidelines, while Cd levels were within acceptable range. Hazard index values were all above one in all villages, with higher values for children. The total cancer risk from metals exceeded USEPA limits for both children and adults. The findings of this study are important for managing water resources in rural areas and other mining regions.

Evaluation of analytical method and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons for fishery products in Korea

Yong-Yeon Kim et al.

Summary: This study quantified eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in fishery products, with an average concentration of PAH8 at 2.13 μg/kg and exposure amount at 7.18 x 10(-)(4) μg-TEQ(Ba)(P)/kg/day. The research indicated that intake associated with fishery products is negligible in terms of PAHs exposure, showing a low level of potential cancer risk for total PAHs.

Integrated ultrasound-assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction for efficient determination and pre-concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from high-consumption soft drinks and non-alcoholic beers in Iran

Ali Azari et al.

Summary: In this study, an ultrasound-assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction coupled with a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry hybrid system was developed for the extraction/determination of trace amounts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in high-consumption soft drinks and non-alcoholic beers in Iran using magnetite graphene oxide adsorbent. The magnetite graphene oxide was characterized and the optimal conditions for extraction were determined. The proposed method is effective, sensitive, and reusable for the analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons residues in environmental samples.

Polyaniline-Modified Magnetic Halloysite Nanotube-Based Magnetic Micro-Solid-Phase Extraction for the Analysis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Beer Samples by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

Zhihong Shi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of polyaniline-modified magnetic halloysite nanotube composites as efficient adsorbents for the extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from beer samples. The MHNTs@PANI showed good linearity, low detection limits, and high spiked recoveries, making them suitable for the determination of PAHs in beer samples.

Dietary exposure and cancer risk assessment of the Pakistani population exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Muhammad Aamir et al.

Summary: Analysis of sixteen priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in twenty-one food items consumed by the Pakistani population revealed varying levels of exposure, with fish having the highest and rice the lowest concentrations. The dietary exposure to PAHs showed potential cancer risks for both adults and children, and males generally had higher exposure levels compared to females. Wheat and milk contributed the most to the total dietary exposure of PAHs, while rice and egg contributed the least. Sensitivity analysis identified daily dietary intake, exposure duration, and cancer slope factor as the most influential variables affecting the risk assessment.

Key Factors for Improving the Carcinogenic Risk Assessment of PAH Inhalation Exposure by Monte Carlo Simulation

Ning Qin et al.

Summary: Traditional Monte Carlo simulation and age-stratified Monte Carlo simulation yielded average risks 2.6 times higher and standard deviations 3.7 times higher than actual values. In contrast, predicted risks of concentration-adjusted and correlated-parameter-adjusted models showed good agreement with actual ILCR values. Accurate simulation of exposure concentration and adjustment of correlated parameters can greatly improve MCS performance.

The toxic impacts of microplastics (MPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on haematic parameters in a marine bivalve species and their potential mechanisms of action

Shuge Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that both MPs and PAHs in the marine ecosystem may have adverse effects on the haematic parameters of blood clams, including decreased total haemocyte count, changes in haematic composition, and inhibition of haemocyte phagocytosis. Exposure to MPs and PAHs may lead to toxic impacts on haematic parameters by increasing intracellular ROS contents, causing LPO and DNA damage, reducing haemocyte viability, and disrupting important molecular signaling pathways. Moreover, coexposure to MPs and PAHs resulted in more severe adverse impacts on all parameters, indicating a significant synergistic effect.
