Pyoluteorin and 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol are major contributors to Pseudomonas protegens Pf-5 biocontrol against Botrytis cinerea in cannabis

Carole Balthazar et al.

Summary: Pseudomonas protegens Pf-5 is an effective biocontrol agent that protects Cannabis sativa crops against the fungal pathogen Botrytis cinerea causing gray mold disease. The antibiotics pyoluteorin (PLT) and 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG) play an important role in Pf-5-mediated biocontrol. The biosynthesis pathways for PLT and DAPG are required for the optimal antagonistic activity of Pf-5 against B. cinerea.

Identification of the fatty acid coenzyme-A ligase FadD1 as an interacting partner of FptX in the Pseudomonas aeruginosa pyochelin pathway

Beatrice Roche et al.

Summary: In this study, the interaction between the fatty acid coenzyme-A ligase FadD1 and the inner membrane transporter FptX in Pseudomonas aeruginosa sheds light on the production of pyochelin (PCH) and provides insights into the ferri-PCH uptake mechanism. The purification of the FadD1-FptX inner membrane complex and the low-resolution 3D models obtained pave the way for future high-resolution structural studies on this important nosocomial pathogen.

AlgU, a Conserved Sigma Factor Regulating Abiotic Stress Tolerance and Promoting Virulence in Pseudomonas syringae

Haibi Wang et al.

Summary: Pseudomonas syringae is capable of deploying specialized functions to cope with various stresses, using a just-in-time strategy of gene regulation. The ECF sigma factors play a crucial role in transducing environmental signals and adjusting bacterial physiology, structure, or behavior for survival. AlgU, a broadly conserved ECF sigma factor, controls the expression of over 800 genes in P. syringae, contributing to suppression of plant immunity and bacterial fitness in plants.

Mini Review: Bacterial Membrane Composition and Its Modulation in Response to Stress

Jessica R. Willdigg et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the stress responses triggered by antibiotics and other agents that disrupt the synthesis or integrity of the bacterial cell envelope, specifically looking at Bacillus subtilis. It highlights how altering the composition and properties of the membrane and its associated proteome can protect cells against various compounds and contribute to resistance, potentially playing a crucial role in the emergence of antibiotic resistance in clinical settings. The regulatory responses discussed in the review are broadly conserved, with the potential to vary in regulation details, but can still be significant in clinical contexts.

Biocontrol of Biofilm Formation: Jamming of Sessile-Associated Rhizobial Communication by Rhodococcal Quorum-Quenching

Yvann Bourigault et al.

Summary: The study revealed that auxiliary bacteria capable of interfering with microbial communication mechanisms can be used to prevent biofilm formation and development. Confocal laser scanning microscopy was used to confirm signal exchange between rhizobia and rhodococci, as well as the role of Rhodococcus in disrupting this communication within the biofilm.
