Methods, progress and prospect for diagnosis of karst ecosystem health in China-An overview

Xiaoyong Bai et al.

Summary: China has the largest distribution of carbonate karst in the world, with the southwest region centered in Guizhou being a critical ecological security barrier. Scientific diagnosis of the health and sustainability of karst ecosystems is essential for ecological restoration and sustainable development. In this paper, the evolution and development of karst landforms are summarized, along with five aspects related to the calculation of weathering and soil formation rate, diagnosis of soil water, evaluation of soil and water loss, interpretation and evolution of rocky desertification, and measurement of ecosystem services. The methods and models for diagnosing the health of karst ecosystems must be improved and innovated to accurately depict the response process of karst ecosystems to climate change and human activities.

DIC fertilization of primary production in karst lake-reservoirs and its effects on carbon sequestration and mitigation of eutrophication

Zaihua Liu

Summary: The role of inland water bodies in the global carbon cycle is gaining attention. In karst surface water ecosystems, phytoplankton and submerged plants can fix carbonate weathering-related carbon and form stable carbon sinks. The concentration of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) affects aquatic productivity and the biological pump (BP), while CO2 concentrations also impact the composition of water bodies. The DIC fertilization effect on BP and its inhibition of cyanobacterial eutrophication provides new insights for climate change mitigation. Future studies should focus on mechanistic understanding and control factors of DIC fertilization, community structure, and the effects of BP on carbon sequestration and eutrophication mitigation.

The impact of heterotrophic bacteria on recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon formation in a typical karstic river

Qiufang He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microbial impacts on autochthonous dissolved organic carbon (DOC) formation and the critical bacteria species in the karstic Lijiang River. Results show that heterotrophic bacteria dominate the formation of autochthonous DOC and recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon (RDOC). Photosynthesis is the main source of biodegradable DOC (BDOC) and Sporichthyaceae and Novosphingobium play key roles in the formation of microbial sourced DOC (MDOC). This research provides valuable insights into the organic carbon cycling in karstic aquatic systems.

Metagenomic evidence for the microbial transformation of carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecules: A long-term macrocosm experiment

Changfei He et al.

Summary: Carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecules (CRAMs) are important components of refractory dissolved organic matter (RDOM) in the ocean. While it is known that microbial activity contributes to the formation of CRAMs, the detailed molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In a long-term macrocosm experiment, researchers found that microbial communities quickly transformed phytoplankton debris when supplied with diatom-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM). They identified specific genetic mechanisms and microbial modules that were closely associated with CRAMs, indicating the ecological role of bacteria and archaea in RDOM production. This study provides new insights into carbon sequestration in the ocean.

Deep ocean microbial communities produce more stable dissolved organic matter through the succession of rare prokaryotes

Richard LaBrie et al.

Summary: The microbial carbon pump (MCP) hypothesis suggests that the transformation of labile dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by prokaryotes contributes to the stability of the deep ocean DOC reservoir. This study provides empirical evidence of the MCP in natural waters, showing that carbon sequestration is more efficient in deeper waters. The higher diversity of prokaryotes from the rare biosphere holds a greater metabolic potential in creating stable dissolved organic compounds.

Coupled carbon-nitrogen cycling controls the transformation of dissolved inorganic carbon into dissolved organic carbon in karst aquatic systems

Haijuan Zhao et al.

Summary: The study reveals a close relationship between the cycling of carbon and nitrogen in karst aquatic systems, with dissolved organic carbon concentrations influenced by the metabolic pathways of subaquatic communities. The metabolic processes of photosynthesis and respiration primarily control the transformation of dissolved inorganic carbon and nitrate, with higher proportions observed in the dry season. The coupled C-N cycling involving DIC and NO3 promotes the production of autochthonous DOC, acting as long-term natural carbon and nitrogen sinks in karst aquatic systems.
