Lactococcus lactis NCDO2118 exerts visceral antinociceptive properties in rat via GABA production in the gastro-intestinal tract

Valerie Laroute et al.

Summary: This study found that the Lactococcus lactis NCDO2118 strain produces gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the gastrointestinal tract, which helps alleviate visceral hypersensitivity induced by stress. This discovery opens up new possibilities for using this GRAS bacterium to manage visceral pain and anxiety in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Environmental Conditions Affecting GABA Production in Lactococcus lactis NCDO 2118

Valerie Laroute et al.

Summary: GABA production in bacteria is not directly correlated with osmolarity, with chloride ions playing a significant role in enhancing GABA yield under acidic stress conditions, while sulfate ions do not have the same effect. This study highlights the potential of L. lactis strains for intensive production of GABA as a bioactive molecule.

GABA-Producing Lactococcus lactis Strains Isolated from Camel's Milk as Starters for the Production of GABA-Enriched Cheese

Begona Redruello et al.

Summary: This study isolated six GABA-producing Lactococcus lactis strains from camel's milk for the first time and confirmed their potential as starter cultures for producing GABA-enriched cheeses. Experimental cheeses made with these strains accumulated GABA at concentrations of up to 457 mg/kg, suggesting they could offer health benefits to consumers.
