Microstructure and Properties of a Novel Carbon-Martensitic Hot Work Tool Steel Processed by Laser Additive Manufacturing without Preheating

Johannes Boes et al.

Summary: Laser additive manufacturing techniques allow for the production of complex-shaped parts. The cold crack susceptibility of carbon-martensitic tool steels limits their processability, but substrate preheating can mitigate this issue. However, preheating may have disadvantages for part quality and powder reusability. This study investigates a carbon-martensitic steel that can be manufactured without preheating to produce parts with low crack densities.

Heat treatment for metal additive manufacturing

Majid Laleh et al.

Summary: Metal additive manufacturing (AM) is a process of making 3D metal parts layer by layer through the interaction between a heating source and feeding material from a digital design model. Post-AM heat treatment is needed to modify microstructure and alleviate residual stresses for achieving comparable or superior properties to conventionally manufactured counterparts. This review discusses the influence of heat treatment on microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion behavior of major categories of AM metals, highlighting the significant differences between AM metals and their conventionally manufactured counterparts.

Effects of processing parameters and heat treatment on the microstructure and magnetic properties of the in-situ synthesized Fe-Ni permalloy produced using direct energy deposition

Eun Seong Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the correlations between heat treatment and the microstructure and magnetic properties of in situ alloyed Fe-50%Ni samples. The results showed that short-time heat treatment could significantly improve the magnetic properties of the samples, resulting in higher magnetization, coercivity, and curie temperature. Additionally, heat treatment caused changes in grain size, micro hardness, and internal residual stresses.
