The influence of resection margin width in patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: a meta-analysis

Yu-Shi Dai et al.

Summary: Based on literature research and statistical analysis conducted until December 31, 2021, it was found that a resection margin width of over 10 mm can improve the prognosis of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma patients, especially those with negative lymph nodes and early tumor stages. If the resection margin width cannot exceed 10 mm, it is recommended to ensure a width greater than 5 mm.

Diagnosis of Cholangiocarcinoma

Dong Woo Shin et al.

Summary: Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), a tumor of the bile duct epithelium, is increasing in incidence and is difficult to diagnose early. Imaging modalities such as ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging are important in detecting and staging CCA. Endoscopic ultrasound and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography are recommended for further evaluation and obtaining tissue samples. Serum tumor markers can also be useful in diagnosing CCA in some patients.

Circular RNAs in cholangiocarcinoma

Wenwei Liao et al.

Summary: Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a primary biliary malignancy with a poor prognosis and limited treatment options. Recently, circular RNAs (circRNAs) have gained attention as potential therapeutic targets and prognostic biomarkers for CCA. Dysregulated circRNAs play vital roles in the development of CCA through various mechanisms, including disruption of miRNA regulation, interaction with RNA-binding proteins, activation of signaling pathways, and modulation of proteins and peptides. Inflammatory microenvironment and chemotherapy resistance are also influenced by circRNAs in CCA. Therefore, circRNAs are crucial for early diagnosis and prediction of CCA, and further research is needed to understand their roles and mechanisms in CCA.

The evolving role of MUC16 (CA125) in the transformation of ovarian cells and the progression of neoplasia

Panagiotis Giamougiannis et al.

Summary: MUC16, also known as CA125, is a commonly used biomarker in epithelial ovarian cancer, with increasing levels indicating disease progression. It is a glycoprotein with multiple isoforms that undergo significant changes during the metastatic process. Aberrant glycosylation and cleavage contribute to enhancing malignant potential through overexpression of a small membrane-bound fragment related to MUC16. Knockdown of MUC16 can induce aggressive phenotypes but also increase susceptibility to chemotherapy, with variable functions helping cancer cells evade immune cytotoxicity and form metastases. This review comprehensively explores the transformations and interactions of MUC16 in ovarian cancer, shedding light on its role in disease progression and potential differences in structure between normal and malignant conditions.

Roles of CA125 in diagnosis, prediction, and oncogenesis of ovarian cancer

Minghai Zhang et al.

Summary: CA125, discovered approximately 40 years ago, is widely used in ovarian cancer screening but its reliability in early-stage diagnosis remains controversial. However, it has proven valuable in evaluating chemotherapy effectiveness and prognosis. Studies suggest CA125 plays a role in the occurrence and development of ovarian cancer, leading to increased focus on CA125-targeted treatment strategies for better anticancer therapy design.

Cholangiocarcinoma

Paul J. Brindley et al.

Summary: Cholangiocarcinoma is a highly lethal adenocarcinoma of the hepatobiliary system that can be associated with liver fluke infection but often has no identifiable cause. This Primer reviews the epidemiology, pathophysiological mechanisms, diagnosis and management of cholangiocarcinoma, and highlights the patient experience and future directions.

Significance of serum CA125 level in surgically resected cervical adenocarcinoma with adverse features

Nalee Kim et al.

Summary: This study found that high CA125 levels were associated with adverse pathologic features and poor prognosis in patients with cervical adenocarcinoma. A CA125 level of >= 50 U/mL may serve as a prognostic surrogate marker for poor outcomes in these patients.
