Realist review of interprofessional education for health care students: What works for whom and why

Bronwyn Maddock et al.

Summary: Interprofessional education (IPE) programs are complex and challenging, but they offer perceived benefits. However, there is little clarity on how IPE contributes to collaborative practitioner development. Understanding the elements that promote optimal learning is crucial in designing effective IPE programs. A realist review was conducted to identify the mechanisms and resources that contribute to IPE outcomes, revealing the importance of interdependence and embodiment in learning design.

Undergraduate-level teaching and learning approaches for interprofessional education in the health professions: a systematic review

Marwh Gassim Aldriwesh et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review to investigate the implementation of IPE in university-based undergraduate curricula, with a focus on teaching and learning approaches. The findings revealed that simulation-based education, e-learning, and problem-based learning were the most common methods used to deliver IPE. Additionally, there was a lack of IPE programs in the Middle East region. The evidence synthesized in this review can support curriculum planners and educators in designing IPE programs.

Does Interprofessional Problem-Based Learning (iPBL) Develop Health Professional Stu-dents' Interprofessional Competences? A Systematic Review of Contexts, Mechanisms and Outcomes

Deirdre Phelan et al.

Summary: This systematic review examines the latest research and evidence supporting interprofessional problem-based learning (iPBL) as a developmental tool for interprofessional competences. The results show that iPBL promotes competences in ethics/values, roles/responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teams/teamwork. Qualitative research dominates, while limited high-level quantitative data suggest effects on students' attitudes and perceptions of interprofessional competences. However, there is a lack of detailed reporting on the context and implementation mechanisms of iPBL, and most studies are conducted in university rather than clinical settings.

Patients' experiences of being treated by an interprofessional student team compared with uniprofessional treatment by residents supported by nurses: a case study

Flemming Jakobsen et al.

Summary: The study found that orthopedic outpatients' perceived experiences were not influenced by being treated by interprofessional student teams, indicating that students can engage in realistic clinical work in outpatient settings. Feedback to students in this teaching model relies on written patient records, but structured observation of student performance may be necessary as a supplementary teaching tool for future studies.

Do medical specialists cope with stressors through fulfillment of basic psychological needs of self-determination theory

Stephanie M. E. van der Burgt et al.

Summary: The study found that autonomy and relatedness are key factors in coping with stress for medical specialists, who construct different coping narratives to combat workplace stressors.
