Effect of a micro-scale dislocation pileup on the atomic-scale multi-variant phase transformation and twinning

Yipeng Peng et al.

Summary: In this paper, concurrent atomistic-continuum simulations were performed to investigate the effect of microscale dislocation pileup at an atomically structured interface on atomic-scale phase transformations, reverse transformations, and twinning. The study demonstrates the dynamic response of the interface to dislocation pileup and reveals a combination of classical Eshelby model and super-dislocation model to describe the internal stress concentration profile. The research also uncovers the behavior of phase transformations and twinning resulting from the interaction between microscale dislocation slip and an atomically structured interface.

Atomistic determination of Peierls barriers of dislocation glide in nickel

Yipin Si et al.

Summary: This study calculates the Peierls barriers for screw and edge dislocation glide in a face-centered cubic (FCC) metal of Ni using the nudged elastic band (NEB) method. The results show a decreasing Peierls barrier with increasing shear stress, and the Peierls stress at which the barrier vanishes. The effects of boundary condition and system size on the barriers are also studied.

Exploring the alloying effects on generalized stacking fault energy and ideal strength of Ni and Ni3Al phases in Ni-based superalloys

Fangfang Xia et al.

Summary: The study reveals that alloying elements Re, Ru, Ta, Mo, and W can help improve the strength of Ni but reduce that of Ni3Al. Among them, Re and Ru are more effective in enhancing the strength of Ni, while Ru has the weakest effect on Ni3Al. Additionally, other alloying elements have a more significant impact on improving the strength of Ni3Al, except for Ru.

Ni/Ni3Al interface-dominated nanoindentation deformation and pop-in events

Jinjie Zhou et al.

Summary: Nickel-based single crystal alloys have excellent mechanical properties due to their unique structure and interface. By simulating nanoindentation and microstructural evolution, the hardness of the Ni3Al phase was found to be the highest and dislocations can penetrate the interface into the Ni phase. Furthermore, the starting point of adhesion force recovery was found to be related to the material's elastic recovery, and the variation of potential energy was related to stacking fault energy.

An atomistic-to-microscale computational analysis of the dislocation pileup-induced local stresses near an interface in plastically deformed two-phase materials

Yipeng Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, atomistic-to-microscale computational analysis was performed on a two-phase material to investigate the formation of dislocation pileup at a buried interface. The simultaneous resolution of dislocation slip, pileup-induced stress complexity, and atomic-level interface structure evolution was achieved in a single model. The findings reveal that the internal stresses induced by pileup can span a range of hundreds of nanometers, and the resulting stress concentration decays with distance, deviating from the Eshelby model. Moreover, the stress intensity factor at a pileup tip is linearly proportional to the nearby dislocation density only when a few dislocations are involved, but it significantly increases when tens of or more dislocations arrive at the interface.

Mechanical properties and ?/?? interfacial misfit network evolution: A study towards the creep behavior of Ni-based single crystal superalloys

Amir R. Khoei et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of temperature, stress, and rhenium (Re) on the gamma/gamma' interfacial misfit dislocation network and mechanical response of Ni-based single crystal superalloys. The results showed that increasing temperature dispersed the atomic potential energy at the interface, diminishing the strength and stability of the networks. Loading resulted in dislocation propagation as the dominant deformation mechanism. Additionally, the study evaluated the effect of Re atoms, finding that they hindered dislocations in the gamma phase. The investigation also revealed that increased temperature led to escalated damage to the interfacial network and the domination of softening mechanisms on deformation.

Crystal plasticity constitutive modeling of tensile, creep and cyclic deformation in single crystal Ni-based superalloys

Suketa Chaudhary et al.

Summary: A microstructure-sensitive crystal plasticity constitutive framework is proposed for simulating the mechanical behavior of single crystal Ni-based superalloys. The model takes into account factors such as crystal orientation, temperature, and microstructural features to accurately predict the tensile, cyclic, and creep response of the materials.

Investigation of physical properties and superdislocation characters of Ni3Al under uniaxial tension/compression normal to slip plane

Xiangsheng Hu et al.

Summary: The physical properties of L1(2) Ni3Al and the characteristics of superdislocations are studied under different uniaxial tensile/compressive loads. The applied loads have significant effects on the mechanical behaviors of Ni3Al, showing opposite effects under tension and compression. The tension/compression asymmetry is inherent due to the asymmetric properties and characteristics of superdislocations under normal loads.
