Micromechanical transverse tensile crack propagation of unidirectional fiber reinforced epoxy SMC slice imbedded in a TDCB specimen

Zhi-Yong Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates a mode-I type of crack propagation and branching in unidirectional (UD) fiber reinforced epoxy sheet molding compounds (SMC) using a fracture energy failure mechanisms methodology. A tapered double cantilever beam (TDCB) tensile sample is selected as the far-field boundary to eliminate the influence of structural boundary conditions on tip K value. By applying the transverse tensile load to the embedded TDCB (E-TDCB) samples, crack propagation is achieved with minor tip K oscillation. Experimental tests using E-TDCB and dummy TDCB (D-TDCB) samples are conducted and the dynamic crack propagation parameters are measured and analyzed. The numerical prediction based on the proposed constitutive law correlates well with the experimental results.

Study on dynamic characteristics of a rotating cylindrical shell with uncertain parameters

Tianyu Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper developed a super-parametric shell element to establish the rotating cylindrical shell model using the finite element method. Parameter uncertainties were considered in the study of the dynamic response of the rotating cylindrical shell. The accuracy of the model was validated through experiments and commercial software ANSYS. A multivariate Chebyshev polynomial interval analysis method was proposed to solve the multi-parameter uncertainty problem of the rotating cylindrical shell, showing significant advantages in computational efficiency compared to the scanning method. The effects of different uncertain parameters on the dynamic response of the rotating cylindrical shell were studied.

Summary: This paper studies the nonlinear forced vibration of a multi-cracked curved beam with damping effects and derives the closed-formed analytical solution. A new transfer matrix method is proposed based on Green's functions. The validity of the analytical solution is verified through experiments, finite element results, and existing analytical solutions. The effects of crack depth and location on vibration are investigated, as well as the interaction between two cracks of the curved beam.

Nonlinear dynamic behavior of rotating blade with breathing crack

Laihao Yang et al.

Summary: A novel nonlinear rotating cracked blade model is developed to investigate the dynamic behavior of rotating blades with transverse cracks. The model effectively captures the dynamic characteristics of the rotating blade and introduces a nonlinear damage indicator (NDI) to estimate the severity level of the crack. Severe cracks are found to significantly reduce the stiffness of the rotating blade and cause a lower resonant frequency, while super-harmonic resonances are identified as indicators for diagnosing the crack existence, with third-order super-harmonics being a distinct indicator for severe cracks.
