Axial hysteretic behaviour of wire rope isolators: Experiments and modelling

Davide Pellecchia et al.

Summary: This paper describes an experimental campaign that aims to study the dynamic response of four different helical Wire Rope Isolators (WRIs) loaded along the axial direction. A total of seventy-one tests were conducted with ten cycles of sinusoidal displacement as input to each of them. The dynamic response of the WRIs was analyzed by varying input properties and simulated using a recently developed hysteretic model derived from a new class of uniaxial phenomenological models. The influence of axial preload and wire rope diameter on the dynamic behavior of the tested WRIs is also discussed, and a close agreement between predicted hysteresis loops and experimental ones has been achieved.

Classification and unified phenomenological modeling of complex uniaxial rate-independent hysteretic responses

Nicola Vaiana et al.

Summary: The study aims to propose a unified approach to modeling rate-independent hysteretic behavior. A detailed classification of complex hysteresis loops is performed, and a novel hysteretic model with closed form expressions for evaluating the output variable is formulated. The model offers computational efficiency and ease of implementation, and allows for an uncoupled modeling of the generic loading and unloading phases.

Evaluation of path-dependent work and internal energy change for hysteretic mechanical systems

Nicolo Vaiana et al.

Summary: The accuracy of analysis and design of hysteretic mechanical systems can be improved by computing work and energy terms. Nonlinear equilibrium equations and a modified work-energy theorem are derived for MDOF hysteretic mechanical systems. The expressions for path-dependent work and energy change associated with rate-dependent and rate-independent hysteretic forces are derived using the Seleemah and Constantinou (Vaiana and Rosati) model. Nonlinear dynamic analyses are performed to understand the work and energy quantities of the mechanical system's free vibration and forced harmonic vibration responses.

Experimental tests and numerical modeling of full-scale unbonded fiber reinforced elastomeric isolators (UFREIs) under bidirectional excitation

D. De Domenico et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the hysteretic behavior of UFREIs under triaxial loading and proposes a nonlinear phenomenological model to simulate the biaxial hysteretic behavior of UFREIs. Numerical results show that neglecting bidirectional interaction leads to higher isolator displacements and superstructure accelerations.

A procedure to model and design elastomeric-based isolation systems for the seismic protection of rocking art objects

Davide Pellecchia et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the rocking behavior of rigid bodies seismically protected by lead rubber bearings and high damping rubber bearings. A phenomenological model is developed for design procedures, allowing for evaluation of overturning spectra and nonlinear time history analyses to examine the impact of isolation devices on the rigid bodies' behavior.

A Krylov accelerated Newton-Raphson scheme for efficient pseudo-arclength pathfollowing

Giovanni Formica et al.

Summary: The computational efficiency of an enhanced version of a pseudo-arclength pathfollowing scheme for general multi-dof nonlinear dynamical systems is discussed. The approach is based on the numerical computation of the Poincare map and its Jacobian. The proposed methodology is shown to drastically increase the convergence speed in the modified Newton-Raphson scheme.

A Solution Algorithm for a Modified Bouc-Wen Model Capable of Simulating Cyclic Softening and Pinching Phenomena

Raffaele Capuano et al.

Summary: The paper presents an extension of a solution algorithm for evaluating the output variable of a modified Bouc-Wen model, which can simulate cyclic softening and pinching. The proposed algorithm combines the Backward Euler Method with the Newton-Raphson iterative procedure, and its accuracy and computational efficiency are demonstrated through numerical simulations compared to the widely used MATLAB ode45 solver.

A generalized class of uniaxial rate-independent models for simulating asymmetric mechanical hysteresis phenomena

Nicole Vaiana et al.

Summary: This article extends a class of rate-independent models to simulate complex asymmetric mechanical hysteresis phenomena. The novel formulation allows for evaluation of generalized force by solving a scalar equation and using only one history variable, demonstrated through specific instances such as the Asymmetric Bilinear and Exponential Models. The potential accuracy and computational efficiency of these models are illustrated using the Asymmetric Exponential Model.

Pathfollowing of high-dimensional hysteretic systems under periodic forcing

Giovanni Formica et al.

Summary: The dynamic response and bifurcations of high-dimensional systems with hysteretic restoring forces in all degrees of freedom are investigated using two hysteresis models. A numerical technique based on an enhanced pathfollowing approach using the Poincare map is employed. A five-dof system with Bouc-Wen or exponential hysteresis models enriched by nonlinear elastic terms is studied, revealing a rich variety of nonlinear responses and bifurcations.

Nonlinear dynamic response of a wire rope isolator: Experiment, identification and validation

Andrea Salvatore et al.

Summary: The experimental and numerical investigation on the vibration isolation capability of a nonlinear wire rope spring shows that the device exhibits distinct nonsymmetrical behavior under compression and tension, leading to a significant reduction in transmissibility coefficient across a broad frequency range. The proposed phenomenological model accurately predicts the nonlinear dynamic response and is in good agreement with experimental results.
