Additive manufacturing of high-strength Inconel 718 alloy through the addition of Ti2AlC MAX particles

Summary: In this study, a novel method is proposed to suppress the precipitation of detrimental Laves phase in additively manufactured Inconel 718 alloy. By incorporating Ti2AlC MAX particles, Ti2AlC/Inconel 718 composites with different Ti2AlC volume fractions are successfully fabricated and exhibit significantly improved mechanical properties compared to the Inconel 718 alloy. Microstructure examination reveals that the detrimental Laves phase is replaced by (Nb,Ti)(C,N) and gamma' precipitates. Theoretical modeling further explains the strengthening mechanism of the Ti2AlC/Inconel 718 composite.

Effect of Nucleant Particle Agglomeration on Grain Size

Summary: During the solidification of metallic melts, the accumulation/depletion of solute in the surrounding liquid creates a constitutionally supercooled (CS) zone that significantly affects the final grain structure. Two mechanisms – the grain initiation free zone (GIFZ) and re-melting (RM) of solid particles – related to the CS zone and their impact on grain size were discussed in this paper. The study found that nucleant particle agglomeration has a significant effect on grain size and explains the difference between theoretically predicted grain size and experimental data. Moreover, numerical analysis suggests that solid particle re-melting has little effect on grain size under normal solidification conditions and may be disregarded during theoretical analysis.

Strengthening mechanisms and modelling of mechanical properties of submicron-TiB2 particulate reinforced Al 7075 metal matrix composites

Summary: This paper investigates the physics of matrix-reinforcement consonance in metal matrix composites and the effects of various strengthening mechanisms on mechanical properties of Al 7075/submicron-TiB2 MMCs. Analytical models were proposed to predict elastic modulus and yield strength, and were validated with experimental results and established models, showing reasonable agreement especially at higher volume fractions of particle incorporation.
