Evidence for two-stage hardening in an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy processed by high-pressure torsion

Igor C. dos Santos et al.

Summary: Experiments were conducted to investigate the microstructural evolution of an Al-5.7Zn-1.8Mg-2.1Cu alloy subjected to torsional straining. The material exhibited two consecutive hardening stages during high-pressure torsion (HPT) processing. The first stage involved the accumulation and rearrangement of dislocations, resulting in the formation of fine cells/subgrains. The second stage involved the fragmentation of second phase particles and the development of highly elongated grains.

Influence of processing temperature on microhardness evolution, microstructure and superplastic behaviour in an Al-Mg alloy processed by high-pressure torsion

Denise C. Machado et al.

Summary: Experiments were conducted to assess the effect of processing temperature on the hardness evolution, microstructure and the flow properties of an annealed Al-3Mg alloy processed by high-pressure torsion (HPT) at either 300 or 450 K. The results show that HPT processing at room temperature (RT) leads to higher microhardness values and a more uniform hardness distribution compared to processing at 450 K. The metal processed at RT exhibits enhanced strength and superplastic flow during deformation at 523 K, while the alloy processed at 450 K shows limited elongation due to abnormal grain coarsening.

Seventy years of Hall-Petch, ninety years of superplasticity and a generalized approach to the effect of grain size on flow stress

Roberto B. Figueiredo et al.

Summary: The grain size and grain boundary density have significant effects on the flow stress of metallic materials. The Hall-Petch grain refinement strengthening effect, which is a linear relationship to the inverse of the square root of the grain size, has been well-established for more than 70 years. However, grain refinement softening can occur at high homologous temperatures and both effects have been treated separately. Recent research has shown that a general relationship can explain both the Hall-Petch strengthening effect at low temperatures and superplasticity at high temperatures. This review discusses recent advances in structural and mechanical characterization and provides an updated analysis of the relationship between grain size and flow stress.

The influence of shearable and nonshearable precipitates on the Portevin-Le Chatelier behavior in precipitation hardening AlMgScZr alloys

Han Chen et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the influence of shearable and nonshearable Al3(Sc, Zr) precipitates on PLC behaviors in precipitation hardening AlMgScZr alloys through experimental characterization. The transition from shearable to nonshearable precipitates is found to impact the propagation behavior of PLC bands, serration amplitude, and strain-rate range, decreasing the critical strain rate between normal and inverse behavior regimes due to different dislocation-precipitate interactions. Additionally, the transition alters the onset strain at normal and inverse behaviors based on the different roles of precipitates in the solute-dislocation interaction, as revealed through quantitative characterization on precipitates and dislocation density.
