Effects of pre-aging on microstructure evolution and deformation mechanisms of hot extruded Mg-6Zn-1Gd-1Er Mg alloys

Wei Kang et al.

Summary: The influence of pre-aging treatment on the microstructure, texture, and mechanical properties of Mg-6Zn-1Gd-1Er alloy was investigated. Pre-aging was found to promote twin nucleation, inhibit twin growth, and accelerate recrystallization. During extrusion, dynamic precipitation and particle stimulating nucleation mechanisms occurred, resulting in the formation of strong fiber texture. The peak-aged state exhibited the strongest mechanical properties, attributed to the presence of strong fiber texture and small rod-shaped and block-shaped phases.

The enhanced Zn and Ca co-segregation and mechanical properties of Mg-Zn-Ce alloy with micro Ca addition

Xiaoying Qian et al.

Summary: The micro addition of Ca effectively increases the strength and ductility of Mg-Zn-Ce alloy by enhancing alloying segregation at grain boundary. The addition of Ca leads to enhanced Zn segregation and co-segregation of Zn, Ce, and Ca. This is attributed to the decreased segregation energy and promoted diffusion process of Zn by Ca, which accelerates the thermodynamic and kinetic process of segregation. The controllable segregation at grain boundary, induced by Ca, contributes to the development of advanced magnesium alloys by stabilizing grain boundary, refining grain size, inhibiting dislocation mobility, improving strength, and enhancing grain boundary cohesion and ductility.

Microstructures and mechanical properties of an ultrathin wall high-pressure die casting Mg-8Zn-8Al (wt%) alloy

Qiang Yang et al.

Summary: An ultrathin wall Mg-8Zn-8Al alloy with coarse ix-Mg grains, ultra-fine beta-Mg grains, and nano-sized icosahedral quasicrystal phase particles has been manufactured by high-pressure die casting. The alloy exhibits outstanding strength and acceptable elongation. The observations through HAADF-STEM reveal possible amorphous regions, C-containing phase and/or MgO aggregations, and Zn-rich clusters and pyramidal precipitates. The combination of ultra-fine grains and the skeleton consisting of nano-sized I-phase particles and solutes contributes to the ultra-high strength. In addition, the study indicates the unavoidable interaction of alloy melt with CO2 during ultra-thin wall HPDC and the possibility of pyramidal precipitation in Zn-containing magnesium alloys.

Mechanistic origin of the enhanced strength and ductility in Mg-rare earth alloys

Henry Ovri et al.

Summary: Magnesium alloys with low concentrations of rare earth additions show higher strengths and ductility than traditional Mg alloys, but the mechanisms for these improvements are still debated. In this study, we analyzed the deformation behavior of pure Mg and a Mg-0.75 at.% Gd alloy. We found that Gd addition increased the basal CRSS by fivefold, twinning CRSS by eightfold, and decreased the P/B ratio by fourfold. The observed differences in slip behavior between the two materials were attributed to Gd-rich short-range ordered clusters in the alloy, which enhanced strength and slip activity.

Activation of second-order pyramidal slip and other secondary mechanisms in solid solution Mg-Zn alloys and their effect on tensile ductility

D. F. Shi et al.

Summary: This research investigates the strain-dependent activation of second-order<c+a>pyramidal slip and other non-basal systems in a Mg-Zn alloy. The results show that at low strains, basal slip is the dominant deformation mechanism, but at higher strains, the activity of pyramidal slip increases significantly. Other non-basal deformation mechanisms, such as compression twinning and slip transfer between pyramidal planes, are also induced by pyramidal slip at higher strains. The availability of multiple deformation mechanisms at high strains contributes to the improved ductility of the Mg-Zn alloy.

Grain refinement impact on the mechanical properties and wear behavior of Mg-9Gd-3Y-2Zn-0.5Zr alloy after decreasing temperature reciprocating upsetting-extrusion

Wenlong Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the grain refinement of a Mg-9Gd-3Y-2Zn-0.5Zr alloy using severe plastic deformation (SPD) technique and its influence on the mechanical properties and wear behavior of the alloy. The results show that increasing the number of reciprocating upsetting-extrusion (RUE) passes leads to obvious grain refinement effect and even distribution of the second phase in the alloy. The mechanical properties of the alloy and the degree of RUE exhibit a positive correlation trend, which can be attributed to the grain refinement, uniform distribution of the second phase, and texture weakening.

Microstructures and mechanical properties of a hot-extruded Mg-8Zn-6Al-1Gd (wt%) alloy

Shuhui Lv et al.

Summary: The microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of a Mg-8Zn-6Al-1Gd (wt%) alloy were thoroughly investigated in this study. The dominant intermetallic phases in the as-cast sample were identified as phi-Al2Mg5Zn2, tau-Mg-32(Al,Zn)(49), i-Mg44Al15Zn41, and Al2Gd phases. After extrusion, the sample exhibited a fully recrystallized microstructure with an average grain size of around 1.5 μm and a weak rare earth texture. Furthermore, fine particles, primarily quasicrystal phase (i-phase), were homogeneously dispersed in the fine-grained structure, regardless of their distribution at grain boundaries or inside grains. The as-extruded sample demonstrated a good strength-ductility balance in both tension and compression, along with a slight reverse tension/compression asymmetry. Microstructural observations revealed that the excellent mechanical performance of the studied alloy could be attributed to its fine grains, weak RE texture, and numerous homogeneously distributed fine particles.

Summary: The microstructure and mechanical properties of designed Mg-4Gd-0.5Zr-xZn (x = 0, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt%) alloys were investigated, with a focus on the effect of Zn. The results showed that the alloys exhibited exceptional ductility, with Mg-4Gd-0.5Zr-1.0Zn and Mg-4Gd-0.5Zr-1.5Zn alloys having the highest elongation to fracture. The good strength-ductility balance in the alloys was attributed to grain refinement, texture softening, and the precipitation of Zn-containing second phases.
