Deformable x phase induced deformation twins in a CoNiV medium entropy alloy

Fengchao An et al.

Summary: The degradation of ductility in low-temperature annealed face centered cubic (FCC) based alloys due to intermetallic phase embrittlement can be overcome by implementing brittle intermetallic phase (x) shearing and deformation twins in an equiatomic CoNiV medium entropy alloy (MEA) with high stacking fault energy. This approach improves the true ultimate tensile strengths and flow stress, which in turn enhances the deformability of the MEA. The combination of deformable intermetallic phase and high stress deformation twins proposes a new strengthening mechanism for improving the mechanical properties of FCC based alloys.

Enhanced strength-ductility synergy and mechanisms of heterostructured Ti6Al4V-Cu alloys produced by laser powder bed fusion

Kunmao Li et al.

Summary: To overcome the strength-ductility trade-off of titanium alloys, heterostructure is introduced into Ti6Al4V-xCu alloys produced by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), resulting in high tensile strength and large elongation. The heterostructure formation is driven by thermal activation, copper addition, and rapid cooling of water quenching. The presence of deformation twins in α and heterogeneous interfaces of α and α further enhance the strength and ductility of the LPBF-produced Ti6Al4V-xCu alloys.

The effect of solution and aging treatments on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a selective laser melted CoCrMo alloy

Zhiyun Ye et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve the mechanical properties of selective laser melted (SLMed) CoCrMo alloy through solid solution and aging treatments. The results show that the precipitation of sigma phase as the second phase during aging treatment hindered dislocation motion and improved the comprehensive phase transformation properties of the material.

Si-addition contributes to overcoming the strength-ductility trade-off in high-entropy alloys

Daixiu Wei et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the addition of silicon to CoCrFeNi HEA can improve its performance by maintaining a single-phase FCC structure while simultaneously increasing strength and ductility. The addition of silicon enhances solid solution strengthening, reduces SFE, and improves dislocation behavior and plastic deformation mechanisms.

Exceptional strength-ductility synergy of additively manufactured CoCrNi medium-entropy alloy achieved by lattice defects in heterogeneous microstructures

Jianying Wang et al.

Summary: The selective laser melting (SLM) with subsequent cold rolling and annealing process is used to produce high-density lattice defects and grain refinement in CoCrNi medium-entropy alloys (MEAs), resulting in improved comprehensive mechanical properties. The as-SLMed CoCrNi alloys exhibit exceptional yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and fracture strain. Rolling and annealing further enhance the mechanical properties, achieving higher strength and ductility through refined hierarchical microstructures and sub-grains formed by dislocation.

Additive manufacturing of a Co-Cr-W alloy by selective laser melting: In-situ oxidation, precipitation and the corresponding strengthening effects

Kefeng Li et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigates a novel nano-oxide dispersed Co28Cr9W1.5Si (wt.%) alloy fabricated by laser powder bed fusion. The in-situ formation of Si-rich amorphous nano-oxide inclusions and distinct Co5Cr3Si2 nano-precipitates was observed. The interface between the matrix and the inclusions, as well as their morphologies and microstructure, were thoroughly investigated. The existence of transition boundaries between the inclusions and the matrix effectively hindered the movement of dislocations, leading to an increase in strength. The quantitative analysis revealed a significant contribution to strength caused by the in-situ formed oxide inclusions.

Microstructure and hardness of solution treated and cold-rolled Co75Cr25 alloy

Wenting Jiang et al.

Summary: The effects of solution treatment and plastic deformation on the microstructure and hardness of a Co75Cr25 alloy were investigated in this study. Results showed that fast cooling inhibited the FCC to HCP martensitic transformation, deformation led to an increase in the FCC phase, and both martensitic transformation and twinning refined the microstructure.

Multi-heterostructure and mechanical properties of N-doped FeMnCoCr high entropy alloy

Zhufeng He et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel strategy of heavy nitrogen-doping in a low-cost metastable FeMnCoCr HEA to produce ultrastrong, tough, and low-cost HEAs. By simple thermomechanical processing, a multiheterostructure was formed, leading to a significant increase in yield strength and uniform elongation of the material. The high-nitrogen duplex alloy design strategy developed here provides a new paradigm for developing high-performance fcc HEAs.
