A novel dual-heterogeneous-structure ultralight steel with high strength and large ductility

Xiaoxiao Geng et al.

Summary: A dual-heterogeneous structure with bimodal grain size distributions of both austenite and B2 phase was developed in a novel ultralight steel through a simple rolling and annealing process. The steel exhibited superb mechanical properties, including high strength and ductility, attributed to the heterogeneous structures caused by multi-level deformation mechanisms. The microstructural analysis revealed the different factors governing the plastic deformation of austenite and B2 grains, leading to a consistently high work hardening rate and large elongation. The presence of geometrically necessary dislocations near the austenite/B2 interfaces also contributed to the outstanding mechanical properties. This work sheds light on the potential of the dual-heterogeneous structure for lightweight engineering.

Nano-SiC whisker-reinforced Ti6Al4V matrix composites manufactured by selective laser melting: Fine equiaxed grain formation mechanism and mechanical properties

Chen Yang et al.

Summary: The effect of nano-SiC whisker on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V alloy manufactured by selective laser melting was investigated. The addition of a trace amount of SiCw transformed the microstructure to have fine equiaxed grains, and in situ formed nanosized TiC particles promoted grain refinement through various mechanisms. The mechanical properties of the Ti6Al4V alloy were significantly improved by adding SiCw, with increased microhardness and ultimate tensile strength while maintaining good ductility.

Overcoming the strength-ductility trade-off and anisotropy of mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V with electron beam powder bed fusion

Jiayin Li et al.

Summary: Introducing Cu (3.5 wt%) into Ti6Al4V through EB-PBF enables the fabrication of Ti6Al4V-3.5Cu alloy with improved ductility and mechanical property isotropy, surpassing the performance of the solely PBF-EB/Ti6Al4V alloy. The addition of Cu leads to the formation of micro/nanosized Ti2Cu phases, contributing to a significant strengthening effect and preventing plastic deterioration caused by brittle lamellar structures. Microstructural evolution involving the generation of twin structures and spheroidization of α-Ti, coupled with the intrinsic heat treatment during the EB-PBF process, enhances the ductility of the TVAC alloy.

Effect of low-temperature annealing on microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V produced by laser shock peening

Zhichen Guan et al.

Summary: In this study, laser shock peening (LSP) combined with low-temperature annealing (LTA) was used to manipulate the microstructures of Ti6Al4V, resulting in an optimal combination of strength and plasticity. LSP treatment induced plastic deformation and grain refinement, forming non-equilibrium grain boundaries (GBs). LTA treatment decreased dislocation density and facilitated element diffusion, leading to the formation of GBs with low excess energy and increased microstructural stability. The combined post-treatment of LSP and LTA resulted in Ti6Al4V with high tensile strength (994 MPa) and excellent elongation (17.4%).

Effects of Nitrogen on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Fe-28Mn-10Al-0.8C Low-Density Steel

Shuai Guo et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between nitrogen content, inclusion characteristics, microstructure, and mechanical properties of low-density steel. Nitrogen addition refines austenite grains and enhances ultimate tensile strength, plasticity, fracture toughness, and impact toughness, while decreasing yield strength due to reduced ferrite content. The main inclusion in high-nitrogen low-density steel is determined to be AlN, with aggregated AlN inclusions observed in the steel's dimples, which tend to cause crack initiation.

Achieving ultra-high yield strength in austenitic low-density steel via drastic VC precipitation

Zhiqi Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the precipitation behavior of V in austenitic low-density steel and its influence on microstructure and mechanical properties. The results show that the addition of V significantly enhances the yield strength of the steel through precipitation strengthening and dislocation strengthening. The V-containing steel exhibits improved work hardening rate and delayed recrystallization compared to the V-free steel. The study offers a potential strategy to improve the yield strength of low-density steels through the addition of V and appropriate annealing treatment.

Summary: Utilizing a two-step heat treatment process with multiple precipitates significantly enhances the strength and strain hardening rate of austenite-based low density steel. The combination of shearing and Orowan mechanisms from various types of precipitates contributes to the high strength and strain hardening ability of the steel. Fine planar slip bands and dispersive dislocation localization further strengthen the material.
