Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of AlSi10Mg/NbC Composite Produced by Laser-Based Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) Process

R. Raj Mohan et al.

Summary: In this study, AlSi10Mg metal matrix composites with varying weight percentages of niobium carbide were produced using a laser-based powder bed fusion process. The addition of niobium carbide improved the density and mechanical properties of the composite, but excessive amounts of niobium carbide reduced the tensile strength.

Q. Z. Wang et al.

Summary: To avoid hot cracking and enhance the tensile performance, compositional modification with addition of 2.04 wt% Si was performed on Al-Cu-Mg alloy. The addition of Si increased the LPBF processing window, threshold laser scanning speed for hot cracking, and improved the microstructure and precipitation behavior. Furthermore, Si addition also enhanced the hot-cracking resistance.

Investigation of Crystallographic Orientation and Mechanical Behaviour in Laser-Welded Stainless Steel 316L Additive Components

S. Pradeep Kumar et al.

Summary: The main limitation of selective laser melting (SLM)-based additive manufacturing is the smaller build size and the lack of standard rework techniques. This study explores the weldability of SLM-built stainless steel samples and evaluates the quality of the weld. The results show that laser-welded SLM samples exhibit superior tensile strength and hardness, providing a novel solution for reworking defective SLM components.

Effect of building orientation and heat treatment on the anisotropic tensile properties of AlSi10Mg fabricated by selective laser melting

C. G. Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the effects of building orientation and heat treatment temperature on the anisotropy of SLM-formed AlSi10Mg specimens. Various characterization techniques were used to analyze the microstructure and properties of the specimens, revealing that orientation and heat treatment can impact grain size, distribution, and low-angle grain boundaries, which in turn affect the alloy's plasticity.

Influence of Sc Addition on Precipitation Behavior and Properties of Al-Cu-Mg Alloy

Xiangbin Han et al.

Summary: The addition of 0.2 wt% Sc suppresses the formation of peak-hardening theta' and S precipitates while stabilizing Guinier-Preston-Bagaryatsky (GPB) zones in the Al-Cu-Mg-Sc alloy during isothermal aging. This results in increased corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity, as well as enhanced strength without sacrificing ductility. Improved properties are attributed to the formation of densely distributed strain-free GPB zones and smaller precipitate-free zones.

Overcoming the strength-ductility trade-off in additively manufactured AlSi10Mg alloy by ECAP processing

P. Snopinski et al.

Summary: Samples with multilevel structural heterogeneities were produced using single-pass ECAP at different temperatures to overcome the trade-off between strength and ductility of additively manufactured AlSi10Mg alloy. The microstructures of these samples consisted of partially ruptured Al/Si cellular networks and alternating zones of elongated grains and ultrafine grains. Experimental results showed that the sample deformed at 150°C exhibited superior ultimate tensile strength but limited ductility, while the sample deformed at 200°C exhibited high ultimate tensile strength and excellent elongation at break. The combination of bimodal grain size distribution, Orowan bowing, mechanical twinning, and back-stress hardening contributed to the improved mechanical properties of the alloy.

Effect of Cu/Mg-containing intermetallics on the mechanical properties of the as-cast HVDC AlSiMgMnCu alloys by SBFSEM at nano-scale

Fei Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, AlSiMgMnCu alloys with different Cu and Mg contents were fabricated using high vacuum die casting (HVDC) technique. The phase formation and microstructure evolution were quantitatively studied at the nano-scale in three-dimensions using serial block-face scanning electron microscopy (SBFSEM). The effects of spatial distribution, volume fractions, and morphology of intermetallic phases on mechanical properties of the alloys were comprehensively discussed. The results showed that the nucleation and growth of theta-Al2Cu phase were favored with higher Cu content and lower Mg content, while decreasing the Cu/Mg ratio by increasing Mg content benefited the nucleation and growth of the Q-Al5Cu2Mg8Si6 phase. The uniformly distributed fine theta-Al2Cu phase contributed the most to the strengthening of HVDC AlSiMgMnCu alloys.

Effect of construction angles on microstructure and mechanical properties of AlSi10Mg alloy fabricated by selective laser melting

Xiaofeng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different construction angles on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AlSi10Mg alloys by fabricating seven bulks with different angles using selective laser melting. The results showed that increasing the construction angle changed the laser track segments and affected the grain structure in the vertical planes. The mechanical property anisotropy of the alloy was attributed to various factors such as pores, equiaxed grain structure, ultra-fine equiaxed sub-grains, and working hardening.
