The defect evolution in 1-D shocked tantalum single crystals

B. Pang et al.

Summary: Tantalum single crystals were impacted by 1-D planar shock waves with pressures of 6.4 GPa, 15.4 GPa, and 21.7 GPa along [001], [011], and [111] directions. Deformation twins were observed in the 15.4 GPa and 21.7 GPa shocked samples, while they were absent in the 6.4 GPa samples. The shock-induced dislocation structure was found to be largely random, possibly due to the release wave. TEM observations also indicated surface relaxation.
