Effect of microstructure and texture on the mechanical properties in high strength pipeline bend

Liang Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of microstructure and micro-texture on the mechanical properties of high strength pipeline bends. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) were used to observe the microstructure and texture. Tensile tests and Charpy V-notch impact tests were conducted to measure strength and impact toughness. The results revealed the presence of polygonal ferrite grains, high-density dislocations, M/A constituents in the bainite laths, and high Taylor factor in the outer arc side, leading to lower toughness compared to other specimens. Additionally, dynamic recovery and partial recrystallization occurred during hot induction bending, resulting in small, scattered recrystallized grains in both the inner and outer arc sides. The micro-texture analysis showed the presence of Cube, Goss, Brass, Copper, R-cube, and {331} < 1-10 > components, possibly originating from the same mother pipe. However, Brass and {112} < 110 > were identified as the major factors contributing to the anisotropy in the experimental bend.

A significant toughness enhancement, and microstructural evolution of an electric resistance welded (ERW) microalloyed steel

S. H. Mousavi Anijdan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of an X52 microalloyed steel processed by industrial electric resistance welding (ERW). It was found that a special annealing treatment could improve mechanical properties and reduce toughness issues in welded pipes. Results showed significant changes in the microstructure of the pipe due to welding and heat treatment processes, with grain size refinement and weakening of undesirable texture components observed after the second stage of heat treatment.

A Mechanism for Carbon Depletion at Bondline of High-Frequency Electric-Resistance-Welded X70 Pipeline Steel

Nitin Kumar Sharma et al.

Summary: This study used atom probe tomography to measure elemental segregation of the bondline in ERW linepipe steel, identifying a new mechanism for carbon depletion. Post-weld heat treatment homogenized alloying elements across the bondline, while segregation of elements in the heat-affected zone followed NPLE kinetics for bainite transformation.
