A study on the minute change of the alumina surface structure according to the anodizing conditions for the production of a robust wettability-modified surfaces

Yeongae Kim et al.

Summary: The anodizing method of aluminum, which forms a robust Al2O3 layer on the surface, has gained popularity in the industry. This study observed changes in the surface structure of the Al2O3 layer under different anodizing conditions and analyzed the corresponding changes in mechanical robustness and wettability. By adjusting the anodization conditions, both nanoporous and nanofibrous structures were fabricated, with the latter demonstrating excellent wetting properties. These findings provide a guideline for selecting the optimal anodization condition based on the desired application.

Robust superhydrophobic surface for anti-icing and cooling performance: Application of fluorine-modified TiO2 and fumed SiO2

Yanli Qi et al.

Summary: Flexibly obtained micron/nano-structures and surface layer enriched with organic groups through non solvent induced phase separation method. Combination of fluorine-modified titanium dioxide (TiO2) and fumed silicon (SiO2) contributed to superhydrophobic surface with water contact angle of 161 degrees and freezing delay time of about 93 min. The superhydrophobic surface with desirable anti-icing property combined with excellent reflective performance was used to fabricate well-designed cool materials with high solar reflectance and lower cooling property compared to pristine polymer matrix.

Hydrophobic/Oleophilic Structures Based on MacroPorous Silicon: Effect of Topography and Fluoroalkyl Silane Functionalization on Wettability

Pilar Formentin et al.

Summary: The research analyzed the influence of surface morphology and chemical composition on the wettability of porous silicon structures, showing that perfluoro-silane functionalized silicon surfaces had higher contact angles. The study also established the effect of porosity on the surface wettability of macroporous silicon structures. The combination of etching conditions with surface chemistry modification could lead to hydrophobic/oleophilic or superhydrophobic/oleophobic structures.

Influence of sub-10 nm anodic alumina nanowire morphology formed by two-step anodizing aluminum on water wettability and slipping behavior

Tatsuya Kikuchi et al.

Summary: The influence of nanomorphology of alumina nanowires on superhydrophobicity was studied by measuring advancing and receding contact angles. It was found that increasing the density of pyramidal ANW structures can enhance superhydrophobicity, while nanowire bending decreases the advancing contact angle.

Controllable wet etching of porous anodic alumina toward highly ordered hierarchical interfaces

Chunnan Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents the anisotropic wet etching of porous anodic alumina (PAA) using phosphoric acid to controllably form various structures, achieving specific structures such as alumina micropillar arrays by controlling the thickness of PAA films. By fine-tuning the etching conditions, cone-shaped pillar arrays can also be obtained. The super-hydrophobic surfaces prepared can be used as templates to replicate various polymer structures.
