Back stress dynamic balancing strategy enabled strength-ductility synergy in heterostructured Al-SiC composites

Dongxin Mao et al.

Summary: An ingenious nano-micro SiC-reinforced Al matrix composite (AMC) with heterogeneous grain structures was designed via a novel deformation-driven metallurgy method. By tailoring the accumulated geometrically necessary dislocations and intragranularly dispersed SiC particles based on the principle of back stress amelioration, a dynamic balance between strength and ductility was maintained. The designed composite exhibited a high ultimate tensile strength of 324 MPa and a uniform elongation of 12.9%, with a strength that was 181% higher than that of the ductile SiC10(mu p)/Al composite. This research provides a new strategy to promote strength-ductility synergy by modifying back stress.

Optimization in strength-ductility of heterogeneous Mg-13Gd alloy via small extrusion ratio combined with pre-aging

Shuaishuai Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a Mg-13Gd alloy sheet was fabricated through hot extrusion combined with aging prior to extrusion treatment, showing a combination of strength and ductility attributed to various factors such as the synergy of heterogeneous texture between coarse and fine grains, elevated heterogeneous deformation-induced strengthening and hardening, pre-existing precipitates, and dynamic generation of nanoscale chain-like precipitates during deformation. The findings provide guidance for designing magnesium-rare earth alloys with excellent strength and ductility.

Dilute long period stacking/order (LPSO)-variant phases along the composition gradient in a Mg-Ho-Cu alloy

Kai Guan et al.

Summary: The microstructures of an as-cast Mg97.49Ho1.99Cu0.43Zr0.09 alloy were investigated using atomic resolution high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). The study revealed the presence of ordered long period stacking/order (LPSO) phases and short-range order (SRO) clusters embedded in stacking fault layers. The results support the importance of L1(2)-type TM6RE8 clusters in the formation of LPSO phases.

Revealing the role of heterostructural parameters in hetero-deformation induced stress of Mg-13Gd alloy

Shuaishuai Liu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of heterostructural parameters on the evolution of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) and heterodeformation induced (HDI) stress. The results show that the heterogeneous texture between coarse and fine grains, as well as the larger dislocation storage space in coarse grains, play important roles in affecting the density of GNDs and the level of HDI stress.

Influence of grain size on microstructure, mechanical properties and strain hardening behavior of Mg-0.3Ca (wt.%) alloy

X. Q. Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, Mg-0.3Ca binary alloy with different grain sizes was prepared by low-temperature extrusion and heat treatment, showing a significant effect of grain size on the mechanical properties of the alloy. The alloy exhibited a decrease in tensile yield strength but an increase in elongation to failure with increasing grain size. Abnormal strain softening was observed in fine-grained samples with grain size less than 2 μm during tensile testing.

Plastic deformation and fracture mechanisms of rolled Mg-8Gd-4Y-Zn and AZ31 magnesium alloys

Jia-fei Deng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the microstructure evolution and plastic deformation mechanism of rare-earth and rare-earth-free magnesium alloys during room temperature deformation. The results show that the twin boundaries in rare earth alloys cannot move due to the pinning effect of precipitates, leading to difficulties in slip transmission and the generation of ledges. On the other hand, slip variants between adjacent grains in rare-earth-free alloys are strain compatible, and twinning stimulates the generation of slip for coordinated deformation.

The microstructure evolution, texture weakening mechanism and mechanical properties of AZ80 Mg alloy processed by repetitive upsetting-extrusion with reduced deformation temperature

Xi Zhao et al.

Summary: The repetitive upsetting-extrusion (RUE) method is utilized to improve the strength and toughness of AZ80 Mg rods while reducing tensile anisotropy. The resulting microstructure after RUE processing shows a refinement of grains and dynamic recrystallization, leading to enhancements in mechanical properties. The introduction of an interactive stress state promotes dispersion of fiber texture and contributes to the elimination of tensile yield anisotropy in extruded bars.
