Effect of rare earth Ce addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V

Yi Xu et al.

Summary: Through the study, it was found that the addition of different amounts of Ce element can significantly improve the mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V. The addition of 0.5 wt% Ce significantly improves the tensile strength and elongation, while the addition of 0.3 wt% Ce significantly optimizes the wear resistance. This is due to the significant grain refinement and the complete coherent relationship between ceria and the Ti6Al4V matrix.

Insight into the formation mechanism and interaction of matrix/TiB whisker textures and their synergistic effect on property anisotropy in titanium matrix composites

Jianwen Le et al.

Summary: Considerable studies have been done on property anisotropy induced by crystallographic textures in processed pure titanium and titanium alloys, but limited information is available for the intrinsic coupling of matrix and reinforcement textures and their synergistic effect on property anisotropy in titanium matrix composites. In this study, an advanced EBSD/EDS coupling method was used to investigate the formation mechanism of primary alpha and secondary alpha textures in the matrix alloy. It is revealed that the reinforcement TiBw displays a specific texture after hot rolling and has little effect on the matrix texture component. Significant anisotropies in the tensile strength and ductility can be observed, which is the synergistic effect of the matrix texture and the aligned TiBw.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of heat treatment on microstructural homogeneity and tensile properties of TA15 powder ingots. The optimal heat treatment route of solution and aging treatment significantly improved the microstructure homogeneity and increased tensile strength by precipitating secondary alpha s phase within the beta matrix. Additionally, detailed discussions on fracture mechanisms for different microstructures were also conducted.

Insights into in-situ TiB/dual-phase Ti alloy interface and its high load-bearing capacity

Qi An et al.

Summary: In this study, the interface characteristics and properties of α-Ti/β-Ti/TiB system were thoroughly investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), ab-initio calculations, and indentation tests. The results show that the TiB/β-Ti interface has a low interface energy and a high adhesion strength, while the TiB/α-Ti interface has a relatively high interface energy but still maintains a fairly high adhesion strength. Further analysis reveals that the homogeneous nucleation of α-Ti within the β-Ti phase is energetically preferred in the TiB-reinforced Ti6Al4V composite. Indentation tests confirm a significantly enhanced load-bearing capacity in dual-phase Ti6Al4V alloys due to the strong interfacial bonding achieved by in-situ formed TiB reinforcements.

Influence of Y2O3 addition on the microstructure of TiC reinforced Ti-based composite coating prepared by laser cladding

Zhiqiang Zhang et al.

Summary: TiC reinforced Ti-based composite coatings were prepared by laser cladding, and the influence of Y2O3 on the properties and microstructure of the coatings was systematically investigated. Adding 2 wt% Y2O3 completely eliminated cracks and significantly reduced the number of pores in the coatings. The main precipitated phases in the coatings were TiC and 8-Ti. Y2O3 addition inhibited the generation of Ti2Ni at the grain boundary, but promoted the generation of Cr1.93Ti1.07 in the coatings. Dendrites in the coatings became more developed, and a large number of tertiary dendrites were found.

Summary: In this study, titanium powder embedded with TiB was fabricated in-situ by gas atomization and used for direct laser deposited titanium matrix composites. The addition of boron had a positive effect on grain refinement and strength enhancement, while the TiB network structure also contributed to the improvement of strength. Additionally, the network structure played a crucial role in limiting plastic deformation, crack deflection, and blunting, highlighting its significance in composite materials.

A novel deformation mechanism in Ti-V binary metastable β-Ti alloys: Deformation kinking promoted by dislocation accumulation

Keer Li et al.

Summary: Deformation kinking is identified as an uncommon deformation mechanism in metastable beta-titanium alloys, and was reported for the first time in Ti-V binary beta-Ti alloys in this study. The formation of kink bands is associated with the impediment of dislocation activity, leading to the destruction of pre-existing athermal omega-precipitates and the production of fresh deformation-induced single variant of omega-precipitates. This unique deformation mechanism enriches fundamental understanding on deformation kinking and provides valuable insight for tuning mechanical properties of beta-titanium alloys.

Summary: The influences of boron element and its amounts on phase constitutions, microstructures, textures and compression mechanical properties of Ti-6.5Al-2.5Sn-9Zr-0.5Mo-0.25Si-1Nb-1W-0.1Er-xB (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 wt%) have been carefully studied. It is found that 0.2 wt% boron content is the most appropriate amount for microstructural refinement and mechanical properties enhancement while ensuring plasticity in current near alpha titanium alloys.
