A new approach for rapid fatigue limit assessment for C45 steel based on contrast damage parameters

Alessandra Pirinu et al.

Summary: This study presents a different procedure for rapid estimation of fatigue limit for C45 steel elements under two fatigue stress ratios. Three damage parameters are proposed for fatigue limit assessment of metallic materials, estimated through a contrast-based approach using raw thermal data. The obtained thermal factors are correlated to loading conditions and fatigue limit estimations are made using linear regression and signal to noise ratio data. The results show agreement with classical methods and comparable results to other research data, adding reliability to the proposed approach for fatigue limit estimation on tempered steel.

Strain controlled fatigue behaviour of a wire plus arc additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V

Abdul Khadar Syed et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the cyclic deformation behavior and fatigue properties of a wire + arc additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Compared to Ti-6Al-4V alloys produced by other additive manufacturing processes, the material used in this study has a coarser primary columnar beta grain structure and alpha microstructure. Fatigue tests were conducted on specimens with horizontal and vertical orientations. The vertical samples, where the loading axis was parallel with the primary columnar beta grains, showed slightly higher fatigue life and a higher cyclic softening rate compared to the horizontal samples. No porosity defects were found, and cracks initiated from either the alpha laths or alpha/beta interface due to cyclic slip localization.

Rapid fatigue life prediction of butt joint using energy dissipation

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: This study aims to rapidly evaluate the fatigue life of butt joints Q310NQL2-Q345NQR2 using the concept of energy dissipation within the framework of thermodynamics. A Representative Volume Element (RVE) model is introduced to characterize the energy dissipation related to two microstructural movements, i.e., anelastic and inelastic dissipated energy. The inelastic energy dissipation is used to deduce a non-linear damage evolution model, and a normalized damage model is developed based on this. S-N curves with different probabilities are estimated using the maximum likelihood method, and they are validated by test data.

Rapid estimation of fatigue limit for C45 steel by thermography and digital image correlation

Chiara Colombo et al.

Summary: This paper experimentally captures fatigue damage phenomenon in steels through the combination of thermography and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) measurements, providing a rapid estimation of the fatigue limit. Results indicate that both thermography and DIC-based parameters exhibit bilinear trends as a function of stress amplitude, with changes in thermal and mechanical behaviors sensitive to the selected stress ratio, giving a precise estimation of the fatigue limit.
