Development and Characterization of Biomedical Porous Ti-20Nb-5Ag Alloy: Microstructure, Mechanical Properties, Surface Bioactivity and Cell Viability Studies

M. J. Shivaram et al.

Summary: In this study, antibacterial Ag element was added to the synthesis of porous Ti-20Nb-5Ag alloy using powder metallurgy space holder route. The porous alloy exhibited good mechanical properties and surface bioactivity, with excellent cell proliferation in cell viability tests. The non-toxic nature of the porous alloy makes it very suitable for implant applications.

Tribo-material based on a UHMWPE/RGOC biocomposite for using in artificial joints

Ferda Mindivan et al.

Summary: By incorporating reduced graphene oxide (RGOC) filler synthesized using vitamin C into ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) matrix, biocomposites with enhanced properties, especially wear resistance, were produced. The structural analysis confirmed good dispersion of RGOC in the polymer matrix and interaction between RGOC and UHMWPE. Biocomposites with 2.0 wt% RGOC showed maximum microhardness, highest thermal stability, lowest friction coefficient, and significantly reduced wear rate.

Mg-Ti composites fabricated by a novel one-step high-pressure sintering: The correlation between microstructures and mechanical properties

Xuecheng Cai et al.

Summary: This study successfully achieved the simultaneous sintering of magnesium and titanium using a novel high-pressure solid-state sintering technique. The relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties of the sintered Mg-Ti composites was analyzed, and it was found that the plasticity of the composites decreases as the titanium content increases. Additionally, the compressive yield strength of the composites increases with titanium content.

Effects of pore size and porosity on cytocompatibility and osteogenic differentiation of porous titanium

Yi-Tong Yao et al.

Summary: The study fabricated six groups of porous Ti samples with different porosities and pore sizes using powder metallurgy process. It was found that porous Ti with high porosity and small pore size facilitated protein absorption, cell differentiation, and calcification. The mechanical properties of porous Ti with a porosity of 53.3 +/- 1.2% and an average pore size of 191.6 +/- 3.7 mu m were suitable for osseointegration as dental implants.

Osseointegration evaluation of UHMWPE and PEEK-based scaffolds with BMP-2 using model of critical-size cranial defect in mice and push-out test

F. Senatov et al.

Summary: In this study, a push-out mechanical test was used to evaluate the effectiveness of implant-skull fusion in a mouse model with critical-size cranial defects. Results showed that loading BMP-2 led to a significant increase in bone tissue and BV/TV values at the implantation site, with high correlation to maximum load and elastic modulus values. The adapted push-out test can be used to assess the quality of osseointegration of implanted materials.

Summary: The study investigated surface modification to enhance biological sealing at the skin-implant interface, using a metal sheet and screw as examples. The results showed that pre-deposited synthetic macromolecule polydopamine (PDA) mediated fibrinogen could significantly improve soft tissue response and promote angiogenesis, facilitating the integration of metal implants with skin and bone tissues.
