Seismic response of monopile-supported offshore wind turbines under combined wind, wave and hydrodynamic loads at scoured sites

Fayun Liang et al.

Summary: This study presents an integrated analysis of the dynamic responses of scoured monopile-supported offshore wind turbines (OWTs) under combined seismic, wind and wave excitations. A novel dynamic p-y relationship is adopted to model the soil-pile interactions and the effects of combined stochastic wind-wave and hydrodynamic loads, and different scour conditions are comprehensively incorporated in the OWT model. The results show that scour can threaten the safe operation of OWTs and the load combination effect becomes less pronounced with increasing scour depth, mainly induced by wind-wave loads.

Framework for dynamic response analysis of monopile supported offshore wind turbine excited by combined wind-wave-earthquake loading

Renqiang Xi et al.

Summary: This study develops a framework for integrated analysis of the seismic response of offshore wind turbines (OWTs). The study finds that the uniform earthquake excitation method underestimates the seismic response of OWTs and that the seismic responses of OWTs differ significantly under different operational conditions.

Lateral responses of monopile-supported offshore wind turbines in sands under combined effects of scour and earthquakes

Wenyu Jiang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a practical method to evaluate the post-scour seismic responses of offshore wind turbines supported by monopiles in sands. The results show that scour can cause resonance in the wind turbine system and the dynamic responses of the monopile and tower are less significant in liquefied conditions.

Seismic response of large offshore wind turbines on monopile foundations including dynamic soil-structure interaction

Luis A. Padron et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the dynamic and seismic response of offshore wind turbines' support structures of different rated powers. It reveals that even low and moderate intensity earthquakes can significantly increase the structural demands of large wind turbines, with a clear tendency for Soil-Structure Interaction to be beneficial as the turbine size increases.

Summary: In this study, a sophisticated 3D finite element model of the NREL 5MW wind turbine superstructure is developed and validated. The dynamic analysis framework reveals the significant impact of pile-soil interaction on the turbine's dynamic response, as well as the tower-top motion and mudline bending moment under the combined action of wind, wave, and seismic loads.

Seismic responses of monopile-supported offshore wind turbines in soft clays under scoured conditions

Wenyu Jiang et al.

Summary: This study proposed a new method to evaluate the post-scour seismic responses of monopile-supported offshore wind turbines, considering different scour levels and soil stress history changes. The research found that scour significantly altered the seismic responses of the selected OWT structure, recommending the use of a cone-shape scour hole with a side slope angle of 30 degrees.

Evolution of the Seismic Response of Monopile-Supported Offshore Wind Turbines of Increasing Size from 5 to 15 MW including Dynamic Soil-Structure Interaction

Cristina Medina et al.

Summary: This study investigates the seismic response of offshore wind turbines in seismic prone areas using a finite element substructuring model in frequency domain. The results indicate the importance of soil-structure interaction and the main trends of the seismic response of wind turbines. As the size of the turbines increases, the seismic maximum bending moments increase but their relevance with respect to design loads decreases. The inclusion of SSI effects almost doubles the seismic response compared to the rigid base scenario.

Effect of ground motion directionality on seismic dynamic responses of monopile offshore wind turbines

Summary: The study found that the angle of ground motion incidence significantly affected the structural responses of MOWT. Environmental wind and wave loads contributed to a basic drift to the response of the structure, and could mitigate or increase the effect of ground motion directionality.
