Can Information Reduce Ethnic Discrimination? Evidence from Airbnb

Morgane Laouenan et al.

Summary: Using data from Airbnb, this study identifies the mechanisms of discrimination against ethnic minority hosts. It is found that within the same neighborhood, hosts from ethnic minority groups charge 3.2 percent less for similar listings. Statistical discrimination explains the entire ethnic price gap, which would disappear if all unobservable variables were revealed. Furthermore, inaccurate beliefs of potential guests about the average quality of hosts from ethnic minority groups contribute to three-quarters (2.5 percentage points) of the initial ethnic gap.

Structuring local environments to avoid racial diversity: Anxiety drives Whites' geographical and institutional self-segregation preferences

Eric M. Anicich et al.

Summary: The study found that Whites choose to increase racial segregation in structuring their local communities to avoid incidental intergroup contact, especially by concentrating other Whites around landmarks that are more relevant to them. They also reduce opportunities for incidental intergroup contact by instituting exclusionary policies that disproportionately exclude non-Whites.

Inter-ethnic relations of teenagers in England's schools: the role of school and neighbourhood ethnic composition

Simon Burgess et al.

Summary: This study examines inter-ethnic relations among adolescents in England's schools, finding that higher school outgroup shares are associated with more positive orientations towards that group for almost all relationships and measures. Additionally, schools offer the opportunity to enhance intergroup relations and to mitigate the threats associated with increased neighbourhood diversity.
