Microplastic occurrence in fish species from the Iquitos region in Peru, western Amazonia

Rommel R. Rojas et al.

Summary: This study surveyed microplastic occurrence in fishes from a local market in the Peruvian Amazon. The results show that 100% of the fish examined contained microplastic particles, with an average of 38.3 particles per individual. Most particles were found in carnivorous fish, and there was no correlation between particle abundance and fish size or weight.

Short-term tourism alters abundance, size, and composition of microplastics on sandy beaches

Mustafa Remzi Gul

Summary: The study investigates the potential sources of microplastics on sandy beaches in the Turkish Coast of the Black Sea. It identifies short-term tourism as an important source of microplastics and emphasizes the role of beach cleaning in minimizing microplastic abundance. This study provides important insights into another source of microplastics and contributes to potential management actions for reducing the harm of these global pollutants.

The wedge clam Donax trunculus L., 1758 as a bioindicator of microplastic pollution

Mohamed Ben-Haddad et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of D. trunculus as a bioindicator of microplastic pollution caused by beach urbanization in Morocco. The results show that the density of microplastics is influenced by the degree of urbanization in the area, with polyethylene and polypropylene being the main types of polymers detected. The study recommends using D. trunculus as a bioindicator and implementing sustainable coastal management after urban changes in coastal areas.

Presence of microplastics in two common dried marine fish species from Bangladesh

Jabed Hasan et al.

Summary: This study found a high presence of microplastics in dried fish from the Bay of Bengal. The samples from Kuakata had significantly higher amounts of microplastics compared to the samples from Cox's Bazar. Fibers were the most common type of microplastics identified in the samples. ATR-FTIR analysis revealed the presence of three different types of microplastic polymers in the dried fish samples.

Chronic Microplastic Exposure and Cadmium Accumulation in Blue Crabs

Maria Hernandez-Lopez et al.

Summary: Aquatic ecosystems are threatened by pollutants, including plastics and toxic elements. This study evaluated the accumulation and distribution of cadmium in blue crab tissues exposed to microplastics. The presence of microplastics did not affect cadmium concentrations in the crabs, except for oxidized microplastics where a positive correlation was found between cadmium concentrations in the hepatopancreas and muscles, which is relevant for food safety.

Sandy beach ecology in the Anthropocene: Ghost shrimp (Crustacea: Callianassidae) as a study model

Leonardo Lopes Costa et al.

Summary: The study tested the Habitat Harshness Hypothesis (HHH) using the ghost shrimp Callichirus major as a model. The results confirmed typical predictions of HHH, showing that abundance and body size of ghost shrimp were greater in beaches with smaller sediment particle size and well-sorted sediments. Additionally, larger individuals were found closer to major rivers, possibly due to greater trophic subsidies.

Is the Paraiba do Sul River colourful? Prevalence of microplastics in freshwater, south-eastern Brazil

Igor D. da Costa et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the abundance, morphotypes, predominant polymers, and color of microplastics (MPs) in the surface waters of the Paraiba do Sul River, and compare the effect of the hydrologic cycle on the abundance and richness of MPs. The results show that the abundance of MPs is higher during the high-water period and is significantly influenced by rainfall.

Sediment grain size determines microplastic exposure landscapes for sandy beach macroinfaunak

Peter Vermeiren et al.

Summary: Despite the global occurrence of microplastic contamination on sandy beaches, evidence of microplastic distribution within beaches remains contradictory. The abundance of microplastics decreases exponentially with increasing grain size, and significant differences in microplastic contamination between sites with varying anthropogenic influence may be related to their proximity to a freshwater canal.

Coupling beach ecology and macroplastics litter studies: Current trends and the way ahead

Lucia Fanini et al.

Summary: Research has shown that sandy beaches accumulate marine litter due to floating marine material deposition. In order to better study this issue, there is a need to integrate beach ecology paradigms into litter research, with three proposed approaches to overcome research limits: unequivocation of terms, consideration of adequate scales, and attention to dynamics rather than just patterns.

Leonardo Lopes Costa et al.

Summary: This review examined the incorporation of pollutants by macroinvertebrates from sandy beaches and found that Donacidae and Talitridae can reflect the presence of most trace elements in their soft tissues. It is recommended to select sampling based on sediment and species not yet tested as biomonitors to cover a wider range of species.

Can Microplastics Influence the Accumulation of Pb in Tissues of Blue Crab?

Paula Munuera et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the distribution and accumulation of lead in blue crab tissues exposed to microplastics, finding that the hepatopancreas is the best tissue for measuring lead concentrations while muscle tissue does not provide environmental quality information. It suggests that consuming blue crab meat from areas with high lead content does not pose a risk to consumers, but there may be a risk if all soft tissues are consumed. Furthermore, it indicates that the presence of microplastics in water does not increase the accumulation of lead in the tissues of C. sapidus.

The extraction of microplastics from sediments: An overview of existing methods and the proposal of a new and green alternative

A. Bellasi et al.

Summary: Microplastics contamination is a concerning environmental issue, with water environments serving as a final sink for dispersed MPs. The distribution of microplastics in water ecosystems varies due to factors like polymer properties and environmental conditions, with sediment being highly impacted. Despite increasing awareness, the lack of standard protocols hampers proper quantification of dispersed particles in sediments, limiting our knowledge of their environmental implications and toxicological effects.
