Salinity variation modulates cellular stress response to ZnO nanoparticles in a sentinel marine bivalve, the blue mussel Mytilus sp.

Halina Falfushynska et al.

Summary: Zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) released into marine environments can have ecotoxicological effects, but their interaction with other stressors like salinity fluctuations in marine organisms is poorly understood. To assess this, a study was conducted on blue mussels exposed to nZnO and different salinity regimes for 21 days. The results showed that nZnO and dissolved Zn had different effects on oxidative stress, detoxification, and apoptosis biomarkers, but similar effects on metallothioneins and inflammatory markers. The study also found that the cellular toxicity of nZnO was influenced by salinity, with higher stress observed at normal and fluctuating salinity conditions compared to low salinity conditions.

Genome-wide identification and low-salinity stress analysis of the Hsp70 gene family in swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus)

Shihuai Jin et al.

Summary: This study systematically identified and analyzed the Hsp70 gene family in decapods for the first time. The results showed that under low-salinity stress, the expression of this gene family in the gill of swimming crab exhibited significant changes, with hsc70l.2 upregulated, hyou1 downregulated, and hsc70l.4 not expressed. These findings provide fundamental data for biological research on Portunus trituberculatus and enhance our understanding of the biological function of Hsp70 in crustaceans adapting to salinity changes.

Summary: Microplastics pollution in freshwater systems is a growing concern. This study investigates the abundance, characteristics, and distribution of microplastics in the Scheldt River, finding higher abundance in sediments compared to surface water. Industrial activities are identified as the major source of microplastic release. Risk assessment reveals potential adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. The study highlights the need for monitoring and better understanding of microplastic distribution and characteristics.

Summary: This study investigated the physiological and immunological response of Crassostrea nippona to low salinity. The results showed that low salinity led to hyperosmolality in the hemolymph and differential gene expression in the gill transcriptome. The study provides insights into the immune mechanism of C. nippona under low salinity stress.

Differentiation in the expression of toxic effects of polyethylene-microplastics on two freshwater fish species: Size matters

Dimitra C. Bobori et al.

Summary: The accumulation of microplastics has impacts on aquatic organisms and human health, which require further research. This study found that the response of fish to microplastics is dependent on the particle size, with smaller ones having a greater effect. Moreover, different fish species exhibit varying sensitivity to microplastics.

Exposure to estrogenic mixtures results in tissue-specific alterations to the metabolome of oysters

Rafiquel Islam et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to environmentally relevant mixtures of estrogens can impact the metabolome of Sydney rock oysters, with the digestive gland being the most sensitive tissue. The altered metabolite profiles in response to the estrogenic exposure suggest a decrease in available ATP energy for cellular functions, which may affect somatic maintenance, growth, reproduction, and fitness of the oysters.

Negative impacts of realistic doses of spherical and irregular microplastics emerged late during a 42 weeks-long exposure experiment with blue mussels

Thea Hamm et al.

Summary: This study exposed juvenile mussels to environmentally realistic doses of PVC and PS microplastics for 42 weeks, finding minimal negative effects on mussel performance, with lower SOD activity in gills of mussels exposed to PS even at the lowest dose. Growth and CI were not impaired, indicating that these specific microplastics pose only a minor threat to blue mussel populations at current pollution levels.

Microplastics alter digestive enzyme activities in the marine bivalve, Mytilus galloprovincialis

Charlene Trestrail et al.

Summary: The ingestion of microplastics affects the digestive enzyme activities of mussels, with polystyrene reducing certain carbohydrase activities and increasing others. High concentrations of microplastics can lead to a significant increase in total protease activity in mussels. Other digestive enzyme activities, such as laminarinase, lipases, and lipolytic esterases, remain unaffected by the presence of microplastics.

Salinity-dependent effects of ZnO nanoparticles on bioenergetics and intermediate metabolite homeostasis in a euryhaline marine bivalve, Mytilus edulis

Mirza Nusrat Noor et al.

Summary: The study investigated the interactive effects of nZnO and dissolved Zn on bioenergetics and intermediate metabolite homeostasis in marine bivalves under different salinity regimes. Findings revealed that dissolved Zn had more damaging metabolic effects than nZnO, and salinity variations strongly influenced metabolic homeostasis and responses to nanoparticle exposure in mussels. Additionally, fluctuating salinity appeared less stressful than constant hypoosmotic stress, demonstrating the importance of considering habitat salinity in assessing the toxic effects of nanopollutants on coastal organisms.
