Weathering impacts on petroleum biomarker, aromatic, and polar compounds in the spilled oil at the northeast coast of Brazil over time

Barbara D. Lima et al.

Summary: Through multiple analytical techniques on two samples collected in Pernambuco in 2019 and 2021, it was found that they have similar saturated biomarkers and triaromatic steroid ratios, indicating they are from the same spilled source. The degradation of n-alkanes, isoprenoids, and cycloalkanes was extensive due to evaporation, photooxidation, and/or biodegradation processes, while less alkylated PAHs were more biodegraded than the more alkylated ones. This was supported by the formation of mono and dicarboxylic acids assessed by GC x GC-TOFMS ESI(-) FT-ICR MS techniques. Three ratios were proposed based on ESI(-) FT-ICR MS results to evaluate the progress of the biodegradation process over time: Ox>2/O, SOx/SO, SOx/N.

Determination of hydrocarbon sources in major rivers and estuaries of peninsular Malaysia using aliphatic hydrocarbons and hopanes as biomarkers

Mehrzad Keshavarzifard et al.

Summary: This study assessed the levels and sources of aliphatic hydrocarbons and hopanes in surface sediments collected from rivers and estuaries of Peninsular Malaysia. The results indicate that the estuaries are mostly influenced by petrogenic input due to anthropogenic activities. However, some stations also show the presence of biogenic origin n-alkanes masked by anthropogenic features. The hopane ratios suggest that Middle East Crude Oil (MECO) is one of the sources of petroleum hydrocarbons from the Prai and Malacca Rivers.

Biogenic and anthropogenic sources of sedimentary organic matter in marine coastal areas: A multi-proxy approach based on bulk and molecular markers

Malgorzata Szymczak-Zyla et al.

Summary: The study investigates the sources of organic matter in sedimentary deposits in the Gulf of Gdansk and Oslofjord/Drammensfjord. Multiple specific proxies were used to assess the origin of sedimentary organic matter, including bulk markers and molecular geochemical markers. The results show that the combined use of different proxies can help identify locations with anthropogenic organic matter and classify sites based on marine/terrestrial biogenic contributions. The study emphasizes the importance of considering the forms of chemical markers and post-depositional changes for reliable assessment of organic matter sources.

Molecular and stable isotope analysis (813C, 82H) of sedimentary n-alkanes in the St. Lawrence Estuary and Gulf, Quebec, Canada: Importance of even numbered n-alkanes in coastal systems

Anic Imfeld et al.

Summary: Sediments contain a variety of inorganic and organic components, with the composition of organics not fully characterized. Research focused on n-alkanes in coastal sediments shows variations in abundance and sources along the terrestrial-marine continuum. Isotopic analysis of odd and even n-alkanes can be used to determine their sources.

Occurrence, distribution and sources of phthalates and petroleum hydrocarbons in tropical estuarine sediments (Mandovi and Ashtamudi) of western Peninsular India

Mehta Bulbul et al.

Summary: This study provides baseline information on the concentration levels, distribution characteristics and pollution sources of environmental contaminants, such as phthalic acid esters and petroleum hydrocarbons in surface sediments of tropical estuaries in western Peninsular India. The results show varying spatial distributions and dominance of different contaminants in the two estuaries, possibly due to discharge sources and anthropogenic activities. The findings highlight the need for effective measures in controlling the pervasion of these contaminants.

From biomass to fossil fuels: A contemporaneous transition to anthropogenic driven environmental changes recorded in a Central Himalayan Lake

Yadav Ankit et al.

Summary: This study investigates the variation and trends of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and fecal biomarkers in lake sediment cores in the central Himalayas, revealing an increasing impact of anthropogenic activities after the 1970s. The dominant source of PAHs in the sediment is pyrogenic, and there is a strong correlation between PAHs and fecal biomarkers. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of total organic carbon content and temperature conditions in regulating the deposition/burial of PAHs. The toxicity of PAHs exceeds the recommended values for the protection of aquatic life, posing a potential threat to the lake ecosystem and human health.

Baseline distributions and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in reef-associated sediments of Vembar group of Islands, Gulf of Mannar, India

D. Pradhap et al.

Summary: The study investigated the source and concentration of PAH fractions in the reef sediments of the Vembar group of Islands, Gulf of Mannar, India. The concentration of PAHs ranged from 0.36 to 15.98 ng/g, with low-molecular-weight fractions being the main contaminant. The accumulation of LMWPAH fraction was low, while HMW fraction was derived from pyrolytic sources.

Summary: The study analyzed the levels and sources of petroleum hydrocarbons in sediments offshore of Leizhou Peninsula and found elevated levels of petrogenic hydrocarbon contamination in the southwestern offshore, likely related to petroleum exploitation in the Beibu Gulf's Maichen and Wushi sags.

Characterization of sedimentary organic matter and depositional processes in the Mandovi estuary, western India: An integrated lipid biomarker, sedimentological and stable isotope approach

Mehta Bulbul et al.

Summary: A multiproxy study was conducted on surface sediments from the Mandovi estuary in Goa, India, revealing higher terrigenous organic matter accumulation in the upper reaches and intense human activity in the lower estuary with petroleum contamination. Grain size was found to play a significant role in the distribution of organic matter along coastal margins.

Normal alkanes in sediments from the Persian Gulf: spatial pattern and implications for autochthonous, allochthonous, and petroleum-originated contaminants

Vahid Aghadadashi et al.

Summary: Surface sediments from the Persian Gulf were collected to study the spatial distribution and sources of Sigma(24)n-alkanes. The majority of the area exhibited random distribution, with a noticeable spatial high-high cluster influenced by bacterial inputs rather than petroleum contamination. In situ production of organic materials was found to be widespread in the studied space.

Balancing livelihood enhancement and ecosystem conservation in seaweed farmed areas: A case study from Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve, India

P. Krishnan et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of Kappaphycus alvarezii on coral reefs in Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar, finding that the red algae did not spread to coral reef areas in Palk Bay but did spread on some islands in Gulf of Mannar. The study highlights the importance of evolving codes for seaweed cultivation to minimize ecological footprints in sensitive ecosystems like coral reefs.
