Using LASSO regularization to project recruitment under CMIP6 climate scenarios in a coastal fishery with spatial oceanographic gradients

Raymond Czaja Jr et al.

Summary: This study uses regularization technique and improved climate change projections to investigate the relationship between Atlantic surfclam and climate variables. The results show a negative correlation between western surfclam recruitment and sea surface temperature, and a negative correlation between eastern recruitment and eastward spring wind intensity in New York State waters. It is projected that recruitment will decrease 100% in western waters and remain sporadic, but high, in eastern waters by 2050.

Long-term interannual variability in larval dispersal and connectivity of the Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) around Ireland: When supply-side matters

Ryan McGeady et al.

Summary: This study used a biophysical larval transport model to analyze larval dispersal of Norway lobsters off the coast of Ireland, finding that different areas had varying abilities to retain and exchange larvae influenced by local hydrodynamics. It was discovered that in the Aran grounds with consistently low larval supply, there was a 3-year lagged relationship between modelled larval dispersal indices and empirical adult burrow densities.

Dynamic energy budget modeling of Atlantic surfclam, Spisula solidissima, under future ocean acidification and warming

Emilien Pousse et al.

Summary: A dynamic energy budget model was used to study the effects of ocean acidification on Atlantic surfclam bioenergetics. The simulation results showed that future warming and acidification conditions would result in faster growth and increased energy allocation for reproduction in young surfclams, but a reduction in maximum shell length and energy allocated to reproduction was observed by the beginning of the 22nd century according to the RCP 8.5 scenario.

Short-term exposure to concurrent biotic and abiotic stressors may impair farmed molluscs performance

Mar Bosch-Belmar et al.

Summary: Global warming may result in the spread and proliferation of outbreak forming species in artificial aquaculture structures. When exposed to harmful substances, increasing temperature, and short-term hypoxia, farmed mussels' functional traits are significantly altered, potentially affecting their recovery ability and adaptability. Further research on stressor properties is needed to minimize climate change impacts on ecosystems and marine economic activities.

Summary: Ocean acidification and microplastic pollution have detrimental effects on the health of mussels, including reduced immunity, decreased byssus quality and production. The co-occurrence of these stressors increases the susceptibility of mussels to diseases and dislodgement risk.

Impact of larval behaviors on dispersal and connectivity of sea scallop larvae over the northeast US shelf

Changsheng Chen et al.

Summary: This study examined the dispersion and settlement of sea scallop larvae, showing that larval dispersal is influenced by biophysical interactions and larval behavior in the ocean mixed layer. Additionally, the larval transport is closely related to the intensity and duration of northeasterly winds, with the exception of significant larval transport to the Middle Atlantic Bight in 2009 driven by unusually strong northeasterly winds.
