Recommendations for advancing test protocols examining the photo-induced toxicity of petroleum and polycyclic aromatic compounds

Matthew M. Alloy et al.

Summary: Photo-induced toxicity of petroleum products and PACs is enhanced by interaction with ultraviolet radiation through photosensitization and photomodification mechanisms. This article reviews and recommends laboratory approaches for conducting photo-induced toxicity studies, providing guidance on test species, endpoints, experimental design, dosing, light sources, irradiance measurement, chemical characterization, and data reporting. The importance of standardized testing protocols, practical applications, and predictive modeling in oil spill science is discussed.

Bridging the lab to field divide: Advancing oil spill biological effects models requires revisiting aquatic toxicity testing

Deborah P. French-McCay et al.

Summary: Oil fate and exposure modeling is used to estimate exposure histories of oil components and environmental conditions over time. Different approaches have been developed to predict adverse effects resulting from these exposures. Toxicity-based screening thresholds and concentration-response relationships are used to assess the effects of oil components. The use of toxic unit models and single compound toxicity data help quantify the effects of oil constituents on aquatic organisms. Well-characterized whole oil bioassay data should be used to validate and refine these models.

Adopting a toxic unit model paradigm in design, analysis and interpretation of oil toxicity testing

Summary: The lack of a conceptual understanding and unifying quantitative framework in laboratory oil toxicity tests has led to divergent conclusions and hindered decision-making. Adopting a toxic unit (TU) model framework can improve evaluation of oil toxicity test data and validate/refine predictive toxicity models.

Ecotoxicological Effects of Four Commonly Used Organic Solvents on the Scleractinian Coral Montipora digitata

Valentina Di Mauro et al.

Summary: Organic solvents, such as ethanol, methanol, dimethyl sulfoxide, and dimethylformamide, are commonly used in aquatic toxicity tests. This study examined the effects of these solvents on the reef-building coral Montipora digitata. The results showed significant morphological and oxidative stress responses, raising concerns about the use of solvents in toxicity studies with corals.

Summary: The risks posed by petroleum spills to coral reefs are not well understood. This study aims to quantify the toxicity thresholds of aromatic hydrocarbons to reef-building corals. The results show that Acropora millepora is more sensitive to aromatic hydrocarbons compared to other corals and aquatic taxa.

Assessment of viability in coral oocytes: a biochemical approach to achieve reliable assays

Nayara Oliveira da Cruz et al.

Summary: Given the threat of extinction to coral reefs, reproductive biotechnologies can help fight against extinction. This study aimed to develop a reliable method to assess oocyte viability for scleractinian corals. The trypan blue (TB) test was found to be unfeasible for assessing oocyte viability due to the high lipid content, while the thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay provided a new technique for assessing coral oocyte viability and mitochondrial activity, which can contribute to reef monitoring and conservation strategies.

Coral recruits are highly sensitive to heavy fuel oil exposure both in the presence and absence of UV light

F. Mikaela Nordborg et al.

Summary: This study provides data on the sensitivity of different post-settlement life stages of the coral species Acropora millepora to heavy fuel oil (HFO) exposure. The results show that ultraviolet radiation (UVR) increases the toxicity of HFO towards corals, supporting the importance of incorporating UVR in oil toxicity testing.

Derivation of toxicity thresholds for gas condensate oils protective of tropical species using experimental and modelling approaches

Andrew P. Negri et al.

Summary: Toxicity thresholds for dissolved oil in tropical ocean risk assessments are largely based on sensitivities of temperate and/or freshwater species. Experimental data supported the use of TLM-modeled thresholds for tropical application, and identified several tropical species as more sensitive in the TLM database, which can be utilized in modeling risk for tropical marine ecosystems.

Oil spills: The invisible impact on the base of tropical marine food webs

Renata Polyana de Santana Campelo et al.

Summary: The Brazilian oil spill from August 2019 to January 2020 was considered the most extensive accident in tropical oceans. The study found that oil droplets were present in all sampled areas, with high numerical abundance in the estuarine plume. There were traces of oil ingestion by various copepods, suggesting their important role in the degradation and final destination of spilled oil.

Summary: Different early life stages of Acropora millepora showed varying sensitivities to the dissolved fraction of heavy fuel oil, with larval metamorphosis being the most sensitive endpoint. Coexposure to UVR reduced toxicity thresholds across life stages and endpoints, emphasizing the importance of considering UVR when assessing oil toxicity in coral reefs.

Multi-domain probiotic consortium as an alternative to chemical remediation of oil spills at coral reefs and adjacent sites

Summary: The study found that a multi-domain microbial consortium can mitigate the impact of oil contamination on fire corals, while the chemical dispersant Corexit 9500 negatively affects host physiology and alters coral-associated microbial communities. The importance of investigating the host-associated microbiome is highlighted, emphasizing the far greater damage caused by chemical dispersants to corals and their associated microbiome compared to oil alone, advocating against the use of dispersants near coral reefs.
