Heavy Metal Occurrence, Pathways, and Associated Socio-ecological Risks in Riverine Water: Application of Geographic Information System, Multivariate Statistics, and Risk Assessment Models

Kifayatullah Khan et al.

Summary: Heavy metal pollution in the River Kabul in Pakistan was studied using analytical techniques to determine the levels, sources, and potential hazards of nine heavy metals. The results indicated prevalent metal contaminations in the river, primarily caused by industrial, agrochemical, mining, and domestic wastewater discharges. The findings highlight the need for strict regulation and control of anthropogenic wastewater discharge to protect the environment and public health.

Potentially Harmful Elements Accumulation and Health Risk Assessment of Edible Fish Tissues Caught from the Phander Valley, Northern Pakistan

Said Muhammad et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentrations of potentially harmful elements in edible tissues of trout fish in the Phander Valley were within the threshold limits set by FAO. Chronic risk assessment showed that zinc consumption in fish muscle posed the highest risk for juveniles, while cadmium consumption posed the lowest risk for adults. High HQ values for juveniles consuming cadmium in fish tissues exceeded the threshold limit, indicating a potential chronic risk.

Heavy metals contamination, potential pathways and risks along the Indus Drainage System of Pakistan

Kifayatullah Khan et al.

Summary: This study assessed the pollution status, sources, diffusion and potential risks of heavy metals in river water along the entire Indus Drainage System of Pakistan. The main sources of contamination were identified and the potential ecological risks, especially in terms of carcinogenic metals, were highlighted. River Indus and Chenab were found to have the highest concentrations of heavy metals, posing significant health risks for exposed populations.

Heavy metal pollution in the soil of a riverine basin: distribution, source, and potential hazards

Kifayatullah Khan et al.

Summary: This study focuses on soil pollution with heavy metals in the basin of River Swat, Pakistan, revealing that the most abundant heavy metals in the soil are Al, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb, Co, Cd, and Hg. The pollution is mainly caused by human activities in the area. Pollution indices evaluation indicates that the soil in the region is generally highly contaminated with heavy metals.

Kifayatullah Khan et al.

Summary: This study assessed the occurrence and potential sources of PFAAs in the Indus Drainage System in Pakistan, finding that short-chain PFAAs were more prevalent than long-chain PFAAs. The study also determined that different locations contribute differently to individual PFAA concentrations.

Spatial distribution and eco-environmental risk assessment of heavy metals in surface sediments from a crater lake (Bosomtwe/Bosumtwi)

Gordon Amankwaa et al.

Summary: Analysis of sediment samples from Bosumtwi Lake in Ghana revealed moderate environmental risk due to severe enrichment of mercury. Natural processes were found to be the main sources of iron, arsenic, cobalt, chromium, and nickel in the sediments. There was no strong correlation between heavy metal contents, sediment grain sizes, and total organic carbon, indicating little control in their distribution and transport pathway.

Heavy metals bioaccumulation and subsequent multiple biomarkers based appraisal of toxicity in the critically endangered Tor putitora

Sana Ullah et al.

Summary: The study assessed the impact of effluents from a hydropower project on the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in critically endangered Tor putitora, finding that the heavy metals had toxic effects on the biochemical, hematological, and serum biochemical profiles of the fish. It was suggested that stocking fish in appropriate amounts, assessing fish diversity and water quality regularly, and implementing strict environmental protection and fishing laws are essential to ensure the safety and conservation of wild fisheries.

Nutritional value and bioaccumulation of heavy metals in muscle tissues of five commercially important marine fish species from the Red Sea

Elsayed M. Younis et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the nutritional quality and heavy metal concentration in muscle tissues of five commercially important marine fish species from the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia. Significant differences were observed in proximate chemical composition of fish muscles among different species, as well as in heavy metal concentrations. The bioaccumulation of certain heavy metals in fish muscles exceeded the standard concentration, indicating potential risks to consumer health.

Levels of toxic metals in edible fish species of the Tigris River (Turkey); Threat to public health

Yalcin Tore et al.

Summary: The study assessed the levels of heavy metals in fish species from the Tigris River in Turkey and found that most of them were below the maximum permissible limits, posing no health risk to consumers. However, some species showed elevated levels of certain heavy metals, indicating a potential toxicological hazard to community health.

Summary: This study assessed the human health risks caused by heavy metal contamination in the surface water of the Houjing River in southern Taiwan. The results showed severe synergistic contamination of heavy metals with copper, nickel, and lead contributing the most, and copper posing the highest non-carcinogenic risk. Additionally, the cumulative risks from fish ingestion were significantly higher than those from swimming scenarios.

Temporal and spatial distributions and sources of heavy metals in atmospheric deposition in western Taihu Lake, China

Yan Li et al.

Summary: Heavy metals in atmospheric dust can pollute soil, water, and sediment, posing a threat to human health. This study focused on the temporal and spatial distribution of heavy metals in atmospheric deposition in western Taihu Lake. Results showed that heavy metal concentrations were higher in winter, lower in summer, and correlated with distance from the city. The health risk assessment values were higher in winter and spring, especially near the city and in suburbs.

Muhammad Aamir Munir et al.

Summary: Mercury bioaccumulation in fish and scalp hair was assessed in fishing communities along the river Swat in Pakistan. Significant differences were found in mercury concentrations between upstream and downstream fish and scalp hair. Health problems in the fishing community were attributed to mercury accumulation from fish consumption.

Human health risk assessment from heavy metals in three dominant fish species of the Ankobra river, Ghana

Elizabeth Effah et al.

Summary: The study found that fish around the Ankobra River in Ghana are contaminated with heavy metals, but pose no significant non-carcinogenic health risk to human consumption. Although levels of Mn, Zn, and Hg in fish exceeded WHO permissible limits, the health risk estimated for all heavy metals was below 1, indicating no significant non-carcinogenic risk.
