Geochemical characteristics of heavy metals in surface sediments of the Bohai Strait, China

Shenghui Jiang et al.

Summary: We analyzed the heavy metal (Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) content and particle size of surface sediment samples taken from 123 sites in the Bohai Strait of China. All five heavy metals showed a similar distribution in the strait, with lower concentrations in the middle and higher concentrations at the sides. The Laotieshan Channel had the lowest heavy metal content due to rapid currents. Only 1.6% of the sample sites were polluted by Cr and Cu, according to our pollution index (Pi) calculations. Few sites were polluted by heavy metals based on geo-accumulation index (Igeo) values. Pb levels were influenced by terrigenous inputs and clay adsorption, while the levels of other heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn) were mainly controlled by terrigenous inputs.

Spatial variation of cadmium concentration in the bivalve Beguina semiorbiculata (Linnaeus, 1758) from coastal coral reefs of Vietnam

Victor Ya. Kavun et al.

Summary: The spatial distribution of trace metals in the soft tissues of Beguina semiorbiculata from coastal reefs of Vietnam was studied. The concentrations of most studied metals (excluding Cd) were highest in B. semiorbiculata living in Ha Long Bay, characterized by terrestrial runoff and anthropogenic effects. However, the maximal Cd concentrations were found in bivalves from coastal reefs of central Vietnam and Gulf of Thailand, influenced by seasonal upwellings and composition of suspended matter.

A comprehensive analysis on source-specific ecological risk of metal(loid)s in surface sediments of mangrove wetlands in Jiulong River Estuary, China

Yu Yan et al.

Summary: Metal(loid)s in mangrove sediments pose ecological risks, particularly Hg and Cd. Source-specific ecological risk assessment identified natural, industrial, aquacultural, and agricultural sources of metal(loid)s. Natural sources dominated total metals, while aquacultural source significantly contributed to Hg and Cd ecological risk. Nemerow integrated risk index showed moderate ecological risks. The study emphasizes the importance of source-specific ecological risk assessment for targeted environmental management.

Distribution and ecological risk of heavy metal(loid)s in surface sediments of the Hai Phong coastal area, North Vietnam

Dang Hoai Nhon et al.

Summary: Surface sediment samples from the Hai Phong coastal area were analyzed to estimate the effects of natural and anthropogenic activities on grain size and heavy metal content. The study identified five sediment types and assessed the concentrations of ten heavy metal(loid)s. Different levels of heavy metal pollution were found in different sediment groups, influenced by runoff from the mainland.

Combination of UNMIX, PMF model and Pb-Zn-Cu isotopic compositions for quantitative source apportionment of heavy metals in suburban agricultural soils

Zhifan Chen et al.

Summary: This study successfully quantitatively identified the sources of heavy metals in agricultural soils in Kaifeng, China using various methods and techniques. The results showed that local anthropogenic pollution sources had a significant impact on heavy metal accumulation, with sewage irrigation and atmospheric deposition being the primary anthropogenic sources.

Source-specific ecological risk assessment and quantitative source apportionment of heavy metals in surface sediments of Pearl River Estuary, China

He Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution, pollution level, quantitative source apportionment, and source-specific ecological risk of 10 heavy metals in surface sediments of the Pearl River Estuary. The results showed that the heavy metals were enriched in the inner Pearl River Estuary, with mercury posing an extremely high pollution level and cadmium and zinc showing moderate to high contamination potential. The study also identified natural geogenic and industrial manufacturing sources as the main contributors to the heavy metal pollution. However, the source-specific risk assessment indicated that mixed anthropogenic sources, particularly from surrounding cities, strongly affected the ecological risks.

An insight into source apportionment of metals in superficial sediments from the Tien Hai nature reserve of the Red River delta, Vietnam

Nguyen Ngoc Anh

Summary: This study aims to determine the concentrations of 23 metallic elements in superficial sediments of the Tien Hai nature reserve. Correlation analysis, principal components analysis, and positive matrix factorization were used to identify and quantify the sources of these metals. The results showed that correlation analysis was effective in identifying both allochthonous and authigenous origins of metals. The PMF model performed better than PCA in source identification. Findings suggested that weathering products from different parent rocks were the main natural sources of metals, while agricultural activities were the major anthropogenic sources. These results provide a scientific basis for environmental protection and control of sediment metal pollution.

Study on spatial distribution, potential sources and ecological risk of heavy metals in the surface water and sediments at Shanghai Port, China

Jianwu Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that the southern Shanghai port was heavily polluted by heavy metals, primarily Cd, Pb, Cr, and Cu; while Yangshan Port water was highly polluted, with other areas having lower pollution levels. Cd, Hg, and Zn pollution in sediments was severe, with most sampling sites posing moderate ecological risks.

Health risk assessment of heavy metal(loid)s in park soils of the largest megacity in China by using Monte Carlo simulation coupled with Positive matrix factorization model

Jingling Huang et al.

Summary: The study found that mercury, cadmium, and lead were the main heavy metals in Shanghai urban parks, posing higher ecological risks, with health risks mainly coming from industrial production and traffic emissions. Although non-carcinogenic risks can be neglected, the total carcinogenic risk cannot be ignored, with children being more susceptible.

Thallium behavior during high-pressure metamorphism in the Western Alps, Europe

Shelby T. Rader et al.

Summary: Thallium is an incompatible element that can be redistributed during various geological processes, yet its behavior during high-pressure/high-temperature metamorphism is not well quantified. This study found that with increasing metamorphic grade, the concentration of Tl in rocks remained constant while the epsilon Tl-205 values changed, indicating the importance of mineral reaction history in understanding the retention or loss of trace elements like Tl.
