Human health risks and benefits assessment based on OCPs, PCBs, toxic elements and fatty acids in the pelagic fish species from the Adriatic Sea

Tijana Milicevic et al.

Summary: The study assessed the nutritional benefits and risks of consuming six fish species from the Adriatic Sea. It found that chub mackerel and round sardinella had lower health risks for consumers, while anchovy and round sardinella had lower ingestion of toxic elements. Overall, there were low risks for developing diseases, with inorganic arsenic being the most significant contributor to non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks.

Evidence of complementarity between targeted and non-targeted analysis based on liquid and gas-phase chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry for screening halogenated persistent organic pollutants in environmental matrices

C. Simonnet-Laprade et al.

Summary: This study explored the complementarity between targeted and non-targeted screening based on liquid and gas-phase chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry for the comprehensive characterization of organohalogen fingerprints in Lake Ontario lake trout samples. The results showed that targeted screening highlighted more halogenated compounds, while non-targeted screening extended the screening to unknown halogenated compounds.

Fish as a risk source for human health: OCPs and PCBs in Pacific salmon

Maksim M. Donets et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the safe intake of commercially valuable Pacific salmon species caught from 2012 to 2018, showing a significant decrease in POP levels during this period. While most values are too high for real consumption, the risk to human health from POPs in Pacific salmon is minimal.

Persistent and toxic chemical pollutants in fish consumed by Asians in Chicago, United States

An Li et al.

Summary: Seafood consumption is more frequent among Asians compared to other ethnic groups in the U.S., but there is little information about how culturally specific fish consumption contributes to exposure to toxicants. This study surveyed fish consumption among Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese communities in Chicago and analyzed 103 seafood samples for mercury and organic chemicals. The research found that certain types of fish, such as bluefish, pike, and tuna steak, had high mercury levels, while octopus, shrimp, and tilapia were the least contaminated. Omega-3 fatty acids were more associated with organic contaminants than mercury. Consumption limitations were identified for seven types of fish based on risk assessment.

Halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs) in marine fish from the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea: Levels, distribution, and health risk assessment

Liang Zhu et al.

Summary: Six marine fish species from the Beibu Gulf were analyzed for toxic compounds, and PBDEs were found to be the predominant organic pollutants. There were differences in the concentrations and types of toxic compounds among the different fish species. The consumption of these fish by residents of the Beibu Gulf coastal areas may not pose health risks.

Nontarget analysis and comprehensive characterization of halogenated organic pollutants by GC-Q-Orbitrap-HRMS in association with chromatogram segmentation and Cl/Br-specific screening algorithms

Caiming Tang et al.

Summary: Nontarget analysis allows high-efficiency screening and identification of halogenated organic pollutants in complex matrices, enabling comprehensive component characterization. This study successfully implemented nontarget analysis of HOPs in fly ash, egg, and sediment, providing comprehensive insights into their components and distribution. While there is room for improvement, the study clarified the chemical components, concentration profiles, and pollution signatures of HOPs in the samples.

Thanh-Thien Tran-Lam et al.

Summary: The optimized analytical method proposed in this study effectively measured 656 pesticide residues in rice samples collected in Vietnam, highlighting the serious environmental and health impacts of pesticide applications. The results demonstrated the efficacy of the method in detecting pesticide contamination in rice and suggested the need for effective management strategies to address these issues.
