Human-induced salinity changes impact marine organisms and ecosystems

Till Roethig et al.

Summary: Climate change is significantly impacting marine and coastal ecosystems worldwide. While the effects of ocean warming and acidification are well-studied, there is limited research on the impacts of human-induced changes in ocean salinity. These salinity changes have the potential to affect ocean currents, oxygen saturation, and sea level rise, as well as impact marine biodiversity and ecosystem structure. It is crucial to gather comprehensive salinity data in dynamic coastal regions to understand the relationships between salinity and ecosystem functions and to project future changes that can have implications for carbon sequestration and freshwater availability.

Phytoplankton community structure is governed by salinity gradient and nutrient composition in the tropical estuarine system

M. D. Bharathi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of salinity and hydrological characteristics on phytoplankton community structure in tropical estuaries. The results show that the lower estuarine region is dominated by diatoms, while the upper estuarine region has higher phytoplankton biomass/abundance and more diverse taxa. Phytoplankton abundance is primarily governed by light availability and grazing pressure, while variations in nutrient concentrations and salinity influence phytoplankton community structure.

Elevated-CO2 and nutrient limitation synergistically reduce the growth and photosynthetic performances of a commercial macroalga Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis

Wei Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physiological responses of economically important red algae Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis under the combination conditions of ocean acidification and nutrients limitation. The results showed that the growth and photosynthetic performances of G. lemaneiformis were synergistically inhibited by ocean acidification and nutrient limitation, with phosphorus limitation having a greater effect.

Phytoplankton responses to changing temperature and nutrient availability are consistent across the tropical and subtropical Atlantic

Cristina Fernandez-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Temperature and nutrient supply have interactive effects on phytoplankton growth and productivity in the oligotrophic ocean. Microcosm experiments in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic reveal that nutrient addition consistently increases chlorophyll a concentration and picophytoplankton biomass, while temperature changes have a smaller and more variable effect. Nutrient enrichment leads to increased picoeukaryote abundance, depressed Prochlorococcus abundance, and increased contribution of small nanophytoplankton to total biomass. Warming and nutrient addition synergistically stimulate light-harvesting capacity, with the largest biomass response observed in the warmed, nutrient-enriched treatment at the warmest and least oligotrophic location.

Small phytoplankton contribute greatly to CO2-fixation after the diatom bloom in the Southern Ocean

Solene Irion et al.

Summary: This study measured the CO2-fixation of different groups of phytoplankton in the Southern Ocean and found that small phytoplankton play a significant role in carbon fixation and export, especially after intense diatom blooms. The results highlight the importance of further exploring the role of small cells in CO2-fixation and export in the Southern Ocean.

Low shifts in salinity determined assembly processes and network stability of microeukaryotic plankton communities in a subtropical urban reservoir

Yuanyuan Mo et al.

Summary: The study found that an increase in salinity alters plankton community composition and decreases diversity. Salinity change influences community assembly through regulating the balance between deterministic and stochastic processes, with higher robustness of core plankton subnetworks at low-salinity levels and satellite subnetworks at medium-/high-salinity levels. The results suggest that even small increases in salinity at low levels can exert selective pressure on microeukaryotic plankton diversity and alter community assembly mechanisms and network stability.

Biophysical controls on seasonal changes in the structure, growth, and grazing of the size-fractionated phytoplankton community in the northern South China Sea

Yuan Dong et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the growth and grazing dynamics of different sized phytoplankton in coastal oceans are influenced by seasonal environmental changes, with a combined effect of bottom-up and top-down processes on phytoplankton population dynamics.

Phytoplankton community structuring and succession in a competition-neutral resource landscape

Michael J. Behrenfeld et al.

Summary: Phytoplankton community composition and succession are influenced by resource competition, but direct competition for growth-limiting resources is uncommon. In stable aquatic environments, small cells dominate, while in dynamic environments, predator-prey interactions and blooming physiologies lead to larger cell sizes. The conceptual mandala proposed provides a framework for interpreting and modeling the environmental structuring of natural phytoplankton populations.
