Species diversity and community structure of microalgae living on microplastics in Luoyuan Bay, China

Kang Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed and compared the species composition of microalgae on microplastics (called epimicroplastic microalgae or EMP-MA) and planktonic microalgae (PM) in Luoyuan Bay. The study found that the number of species in the EMP-MA community was higher than that in the PM community, but the diversity and evenness of the EMP-MA community were lower. Additionally, 12 harmful algal species were found in the EMP-MA community, suggesting an increased risk of harmful algal blooms.

Microplastics in the soil: A review of distribution, anthropogenic impact, and interaction with soil microorganisms based on meta-analysis

Xinxin You et al.

Summary: Microplastics (MPs) are anthropogenic pollutants that pose a serious threat to soil ecosystems and human health. This study found significant differences in MP size between China and other countries, and identified a link between industrial production and the abundance of polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs). The study also discussed the interaction between soil MPs and ecosystems.

The Occurrence of Microplastics and the Formation of Biofilms by Pathogenic and Opportunistic Bacteria as Threats in Aquaculture

Paulina Cholewinska et al.

Summary: Aquaculture is the fastest growing branch of animal production, but plastic particles pose a serious threat to its sustainability by causing water pollution and serving as a medium for disease transmission. Urgent measures are needed to reduce the influx of plastic into aquacultural habitats.
