Novel pelagiphage isolate Polarivirus skadi is a polar specialist that dominates SAR11-associated bacteriophage communities at high latitudes

Holger H. Buchholz et al.

Summary: This study reports the discovery of a novel pelagiphage called Polarivirus skadi, which is the sole representative of a new genus. P. skadi is closely related to the globally dominant pelagiphage HTVC010P. Experimental evaluation showed that P. skadi is a specialist in polar regions, and its abundance is negatively correlated with temperature and positively correlated with nutrients, available oxygen, and chlorophyll concentrations. Most other pelagiphages are rare in marine environments and limited to discrete ecological niches.

MCRL: using a reference library to compress a metagenome into a non-redundant list of sequences, considering viruses as a case study

Arbel D. Tadmor et al.

Summary: The study introduces a novel metagenomic clustering method, MCRL, which can extract potential gene families from metagenomes. Unlike traditional methods, MCRL does not require contig overlap to be associated with a cluster, enabling better utilization of information in the metagenome.

Phosphonate production by marine microbes: Exploring new sources and potential function

Marianne Acker et al.

Summary: This study reveals that a small fraction of microbial producers in the ocean sustain the presence of phosphonates and allocate a significant portion of their phosphorus quota for phosphonate production. The phosphonates may be associated with cell-surface glycoproteins, mediating ecological interactions between the cell and its surrounding environment.

Genomes from Uncultivated Pelagiphages Reveal Multiple Phylogenetic Clades Exhibiting Extensive Auxiliary Metabolic Genes and Cross-Family Multigene Transfers

Fabian Wittmers et al.

Summary: This study identified 80 complete, undescribed Podoviridae genomes from viral metagenomic data sets and revealed previously unknown auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs). The results also discovered a new secretion system that influences host biology. These findings have important implications for understanding the ecology and evolution of marine phages and their hosts.

Should Bacteriophages Be Classified as Parasites or Predators?

Grzegorz Wegrzyn

Summary: Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria and replicate within bacterial cells. They have been extensively studied in genetics, molecular biology, genetic engineering, biotechnology, and are also recognized for their significant impact on the natural environment, human health, and disease. After analyzing literature and biological definitions, it can be concluded that bacteriophages should be classified as parasites, specifically lethal phages.
